contract work in edmonton @ spar L-3
DO NOT come to Edmonton for contract work. Rumor has it there is a Strike in the works and the union is taking names/addresses/licence plate #'s of contractors. Not a good situation.
Endless, endless, endless....tsk, tsk. He was just quoting a rumor. Giving us a "heads up", so to speak. Now why would he call anyone a scab? A term that, by the way, I find really offensive! Some so-called "scabs" could have kept C3 from going belly-up. Not to mention the fortune they would have saved AC! If we really think about it, how big a deal would it be to replace a bunch of captains making 200K with people willing to do the job for a scant 120K???? Cuz if pilots really think they're worth over 200K to work 6-8 days a month, judgement day shall come and fire and brimstone shall rain down upon them!!!!

Rumors about the union going on strike are true, things are getting pretty bad around there. Spar was purchased by a big American company, (L3) and they are trying to cut back on wages and other benifits. Spar is a heavy maintenace facility and the average wage is about 45K-50K a year. The company has even been screwing with the contractors, by cutting back their wages and imposing fees for insurance and workers compensation, among other things. Because of this Spar has started loosing a few contractors every day. Most of the union and contract workers get along pretty well at Spar (what a crazy idea eh?) and it would be a shame to see that change. So there is the straight scoop on what is going on, and the previous post is correct this is probibably not a great place to go until everything is worked out.
Endless, my good man, thou hast missed the point. In the "milk and honey" days, companies could afford to pay the big bucks....but today? With the competition from "no frills" carriers, one must make concessions if one is to stay in the biz...and sometimes that means becomming a little more realistic with the old pay cheques....And I know I'd be happy to drive a 777 for 120K per...and yourself?

I think that people are focusing on the fact that a few pilots make big bucks when they should be focusing on the fact that union ramp rats are able to force a company to pay them 70 Thousand a year when they are only worth about $10 bucks per hour...that's why companies are going out of business!!

hum...
I DO!
By the way DOC don't talk about things you can't possibly understand and that includes anything regarding Air Canada. Sorry to say something negative, I'm quite against this type of talk but teeth started to screech when I read DOC's words of wisdom...
Once again sorry for the others!
Let's try to keep this section of the forum on a job perspective... not personal opinions on how others should operate their airlines.
