Is there a maximum distance or time limit for an IFR alternate? Or can it be 1000 nm away from the destination airport, or any length of time as long as you have enough fuel to get to it. I’ve been trying to find the answer in the CAR’s but no luck.
Example you fly from Yellowknife to Inuvik, and use Edmonton Int. For the Alt. Assuming you can meet all the other fuel requirements. Is there a distance or time limit for this?

Well if you've taken off from YZF to YEV and YZF doesn't meet at the very least alternate minimums then you may be slightly retarded. Especially if YUB and YVQ are below as well.
Nothing says you can't do it, except maybe common sense...but that's surprisingly uncommon these days.

I guess now that I think about it (are you supposed to think before or after you post?) it really depends on what kind of aircact you have and what kind of range you have.
Before putting yourself at that kind of risk I'd be doing some PNR and CP calculations. You don't want to find youself having to fly 1000 nm single engine.

As I finish my 2nd cup of coffee and my synapses get up to speed, I realize I mixed up a take-off alternate with a destination alternate.
