Check out Cessna 172?

Post by Z28 »

Hello aviators

I would like to ask what type of air exercises should a private pilot do on a checkout from a flight instructor after being away from the cockpit at least a couple of years from the controls?

Thanks and fly safe

I usually check proficiency in steep turns, slow flight, stalls, forced landing and other emergencies. And sometimes, I will ask the person to plan a little XC and see how he/she does with a diversion and decision making.

Ask about their crosswind landing technique, etc.

IMO, don't expect perfection, but it's about getting back or keeping within safety standards, as in the PPL flight test.

What's the context? Are you looking for legal requirements (recency/currency)? Looking to get checked out to rent? Buying your own plane?

Interestingly the answer will slways be "whatever the instructor wants to see", but the specifics can vary wildly.

As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

If someone can do a precision steep turn and a P180 to flight test standards, they can almost, without fail, do every other exercise well.
