I’m finishing up my CPL and currently have about 50 hours on floats. I’ve been reaching out to various float operators in QC / ON for next season (summer 2026) and I would appreciate some advice.

Option 1:
Start working on the docks for a larger, year-round operator. They run nicer equipment, offer the possibility of winter employment, and might have better long-term opportunities. The downside is there’s no guarantee I’ll be kept over the winter, and it could take a few seasons before getting a flying position.

Option 2:
Go with a smaller, seasonal operator where I’d likely start flying right away. The company shuts down in winter, so it’s less stable, but I’d be building float PIC time from the start.

One thing I’ve considered is that if I spend the first years actually flying for a smaller operator, I could later apply to a larger company as an experienced pilot rather than starting on the dock, which would lead to the same goal but with more hours. But again I won't be working in the winter and may be less worth in terms of money.

I’m trying to figure out what makes the most sense early in my career in terms of money, experience, and long-term progression.

My long-term goal is to build time on floats, possibly eventually move out west to fly in BC / YT / NWT, and later work toward a stable, well-paying position, possibly a regional airline once I have my multi/IFR.

For those who’ve been in a similar spot which route would you take if you were starting out again?

Option 2, and then after a season or 2 you will be bypassing the guys that picked option 1.

I second this.

I’m in the same boat as you, I’d go with option 2. Especially if you’re wanting to go north or west, I think it would be better to get flying as soon as possible. Option one only makes sense if you want to stay in Ontario, and remain at the same company for awhile.

Without hesitation option 2. Nothing in this industry is a guarantee, we’re one executive order away from another downturn at any moment. Get flying whatever you can ASAP and don’t look back.

Option 2 and for winter try get a job plowing snow and do your multi IFR on the winter days you aren’t working in the winter

There’s no right or wrong option. It usually comes down to who you know that gets you a job. Hours, type of experience has very little influence on hiring. Look at the regionals as an example who have FOs line flying that don’t have an ATPL to upgrade.
