On October 6, 1976, a Cubana de Aviación, S.A. flight 455, a Douglas DC-8, departed Bridgetown, Barbados. Minutes after takeoff, a bomb exploded on board and the aircraft subsequently crashed into the sea, claiming 73 lives (25 crew and 48 passengers).

To date, Luis Posada Carriles, one of the authors of the terrorist act remains free and unconvicted of his actions, and wanted to face trial in Venezuela and Cuba. He continues to live in the United States, an embarassement to the Bush Administration for creating the image of a double-standard on the U.S.'s war on terror and it's claim to view states that sponsor terror and those who harbor terrorists in the same light.

Many years ago I had a chance to visit the Aviation Museum in Havana, which is more of an outdoor junkyard with a bunch of old Migs and WWII planes that belonged to the Cubans before the revolution. There's a nice display of that DC-8 and a chart of the flight path from take-off to the explosion point. There are even some parts of what was left of it and the crew biographies and licenses and old logbooks. Pretty interesting.

Went to the same one.

The picture of the painting was taken in the Museo de la Revolución in Havanna, painted by a retired Cubana Airlines pilot named Gaston Sariol. He has a number of very pretty aviation related paintings, including one of a winter approach into Gander.

Had a lovely afternoon chat with the man over some Cuban Coffee.

USSR? What year is it, 1972?

No it was in the early 80's when the US sponsored and trained Osama's crew to fight the Soviet invasion of Afganistan.

My point was that it hasn't been called USSR for 15 odd years.

Unfortunately, although I had Cap. Sariol show it to me I never did take a picture of it. All of his paintings are very similar-- typical Cuban-style, and bright colors, with plenty of artistic imagination.
