Increased Drag, Reduced Power, Steep Bank

Post by pelmet »

As expected, it did not end well...

C-FYKL, a privately registered Aeronca 11ACX aircraft, was conducting a local flight from
Tobermory Aerodrome (CNR4), ON, with only the pilot on board. Shortly after takeoff from Runway
12, an engine cowl became unlatched and began flapping in the airflow. The pilot reduced the
throttle to see if it reduced the flapping before initiating a 180-degree turn to return for a landing on
Runway 30. During the turn, with the cowl still flapping, the aircraft started to lose speed and
altitude before it stalled and crashed into the trees short of runway 30. The 406 MHz emergency
locator transmitter (ELT) activated, and its signal was received by the Joint Rescue Coordination
Centre (JRCC) Trenton, ON. The pilot was not injured; however, the aircraft sustained substantial
damage.

Best to do a final check of important items just before getting into the aircraft. On certain aircraft, that includes cowl latches.
