Type rating validity

    Hello aviators,

    Quick question on type ratings and their validity.

    Received a SW4 Metro 3 type rating over 2 years ago. No longer flying the plane over a year ago. I assume I need to do additional testing to bring it up to speed. I’ve been searching the TC site but haven’t found it yet.

    Anyways if anyone can shed some light and I assume having a type rating to apply somewhere else will help me a little.

    A Type Rating doesn't expire.

    A type rating on your license saves a few dollars for the company when you start a new job but offers little other benefit. Look at the training and currency requirements under CAR part 6 or 7. In general, 24 months after your training has expired you need to go back and do an initial course.

    I have a type rating for a MU2 I flew 30 years ago. I could fly it privately now as I have a valid instrument rating and meet the currency requirements. The insurance company would be the biggest hurdle.
