Now please don't shoot me down if this has already been posted. I did a avcanada search and came up with nothin so here goes...
There is much controversy as to the true details on what and how this really happened but one thing is clear. Hail should be avoided!!
This link has four links that give an overall view and even has a post form someone claiming to actually be one of the pilots.

In the forth link, a guy who claims to be the co-joe says that the only part of the story that was correct was that it happened in Alberta. Nobody quit. So he says. But you are right though, I can't imagine quiting over that. Might scare me alot but if I was a chicken I would have chosen a office job!
Here is what the co-joe was quoted as saying:
"The aircraft was is not a BAX aircraft. It was not flight 705BX. It was not in cruise flight. It was not at 35,000 feet. There was no way to measure the size of the hail much less compare it to sporting equipment. Only half of the landing lights were destroyed. Not only did we not make a "Blind" emergency landing we don't know what one is. The Flight Engineer and I did not quit. And the aircraft was not a total loss. Pretty much the only thing you got right is that it was over Alberta, Canada. Please do some research next time."
