Saw a C172 recently with a massive dent in it that made me wonder about the capability of its wing to provide positive lift overall.
Meanwhile, this helicopter had a scary strike at only 70 knots...
C-GOHN, a Sky Helicopters Limited Robinson Helicopter Company R44 II helicopter, was being
operated on a local visual flight rules flight out of Pitt Meadows Airport (CYPK), BC, with the pilot
and 3 passengers on board.
While on approach to land at CYPK, at 70 knots and approximately 300 feet above ground level,
the helicopter struck an osprey. The bird came through the windscreen and into the flight deck. It
struck the pilot on the right shoulder and continued through the helicopter. The osprey came to rest
in the lap of a passenger seated behind the pilot who was also holding an infant. The pilot
maintained control of the helicopter and continued the approach and landed without further
incident. No injuries were sustained by the pilot or passengers. The pilot was not wearing a flight
helmet. The helicopter sustained minor damage.
The operator's maintenance department inspected the aircraft and determined that there was no
damage beyond the right front windscreen. The windshield was replaced and the aircraft was
returned to service.
