Watching DVDs

I'm trying to watch a DVD on my TV, from my laptop. I have a Gateway 3200 series with an output on the side for an additional monitor. The TV i just bought has a monitor cable that I plug into. My wife's laptop works just fine with this arrangement, but I'd like to use mine because it's a little faster and the movie plays a little better. When i plug mine in, the TV says "no sync" and then the screen goes blank. Any suggestions?

Is your cable s-video or something else?

I had a Compaq laptop hooked up to a tv. The only way it would work would be to hook them both together, then turn on the computer.

I'd also check your computer's manuals, some laptops need some switch to toggle between LCD output, LCD/external, and external only. This switch could either be a function button on the keyboard, or a toggle in a configuration window.

Usually something like Fn key + F8 or so.

I have to disable my laptop display to watch movies on TV since my video card can only display one resolution at a time; either the widescreen for the laptop or the TV.

This had me stymied for quite some time too. Fn + F5 for me.

Awesome, thanks for the tips. It was FN-F4 for my computer. Watching Pushing tin right now.
