Hey Bokboy22,
Give it a shot I don't believe that they need an Indian passport. I've been over there a bunch of times recently lots of expats flying for them. Try Jet Airways they are growing like crazy and have plenty of non Indian passport holders flying for them. I think that's where the true shortage of pilots is.
Good luck,
CB

I know for a fact that there's a very very thorough security clearance involved - one that makes TC's RAP look like simple formality - before a 'foreigner' is allowed to take the controls of an aircraft.
I also know Indian Airlines only takes Indian nationals with such low hours, not sure about the others though, but rumours are that it's the same deal.

Indian bureaucracy will make your eyes water - it took 3 months for one of our guys to get a temporary Indian license so he could fly as a Captain on an a/c to train an Indian crew. And I'm very much over-simplifying the ordeal and the details for this site.
If you want to fly in India, apply! No skin off your nose and you might get the job.
