Does anyone know about an online university that gives credit for work/flying experience? I'm thinking about working towards a bachelors, but want the minimum amount of aditional work and fuss. Thanks in advance

I've been eating a lot more lately and have been wondering if I too could get a little extra credit for this? Perhaps a little tenure upon graduation would be the mutt's nutts as well.

ERAU gives credit for work experience, military expereince and transfer credit from other institutions. They have online courses. Costs an ass-load though.

Athabasca will give you credit towards certain degrees depending on the level of license earned starting with the CPL. They also give credit towards work experience providing you can prove it relates to any courses/degrees offered. This is information I got from an older article so it would probably be best to check with them to find out what they currently offer.

Athabasca is located in Alberta but it is primarily an online, "open house" concept university. It's fully accredited and is considered as much a university as Queens, McGill, UFT, UBC, etc.

Oh.. and Athabasca doesn't offer any aviation-specific degrees. I think any credit earned from a pilot's license can only be applied towards a BAdmin or BSc.

Personally, I think it would be better to get a degree in a field unrelated to aviation, or at least applicable to other careers.

If you're serious about getting a degree just do it full on, don't look for loop holes which give you credit were it isn't due.

Iwent through with peopole who worked full time, had families and took a good load of classes, not a full load but a good one. Lots of universities are good for people who work full time, they have on-line lectures, taped lectures and really god online notes......Carleton is well known for its distance study programs with CUTV, formerly iTV.

It gives the rest of us who worked hard to get a degree look bad.

So get the most you can from university is what i am saying, take courses you don't think you need to take because you will likely learn something new, and it will make you a better thinker.

It's not about the money. People use a lack of money as an excuse for their failings.

For example, you can get a kick-ass liter sportbike for Cdn$10k that's faster than any car. But if you do, you'll probably kill yourself because you don't have the skill to operate it.

You can also buy a 4-cylinder Pitts S-1S (single seat) for Cdn$40K or so. Less than what a suburban yuppie paid for thei gas hog SUV. But if you do, you'll probably kill yourself because you don't have the skill to operate it.

It's not about the money. I really don't understand why everyone doesn't have a liter sportbike, a Pitts S-1S, and a girlfriend with long blonde hair, large nicely-shaped breasts, a flat tummy, and a rear end that looks awesome in a pair of size 2 jeans with 5% spandex.

Why would you want to go through life without them?

No, you miss the point entirely. University isn't about rewarding hard work, it's about the acquisition of knowledge.

For example, when I started my first year of engineering at Queen's, you were given the option of "challenging" a course, where you could opt to write the final exam, and if you passed, you were given credit for the course and you went on to take 2nd year course instead.

You, despite your arrogant degree claim, are the complete antithesis of everything a University stands for.

You have worked hard for many years, but despite that, haven't acquired any knowledge, and still haven't a clue about gravity, which is pretty frightening for a flight instructor.

Come on!!! I think people should get credit for life experience. If you went back to university and saw how many ignorant and immature children were walking around with A+ averages looking at top paying jobs, you'd shit. A lot of these kids have no idea what the real world is like. Some have never held down a job or even been out to their home town!

How is getting credit for something you know a bad thing?? That's why they call it credit. You know it already, have done it already, have proven yourself.

It seems we might be going slightly askew here. I was never trying to get something for nothing. I was, however, trying to take what I already have, amalgamate that with new courses, and end up with a recognized piece of paper. I appreciate the constructive posts.

I merely said if you want to get a degree in a certain area are then do it and follow the program, it was set up by professionals who know what it takes to get something from it at the end.

Left with no Knowledge beg to differ you pompass ass........aside from that University is not about gaining knowledge it is about learning how to think, being logical and learning to argue theories.

If all you were there to do is puke out previously known things then Universities in general would be pretty useless. But engineers are different from science people, so maybe there is a difference there.

However, my profs rewarded me not because i could regergitate, spell properly or make money. They rewarded me because i was able to complete a masters level thesis with very little guidence....understand its ramifications and indicate what the next step in the research area was. This is what scientists do in an effort to unserstand the natural world, oddly enough so people like you can have boats planes and whatever else. So my apologies, once again, if i made a mistake earlier, everyone does!! it was simply a slip of the mind.
