Type 1 Deice Fluid

Post by Treehawk »

Does anyone have experience with Kilfrost?
Can it be used at room temperature or does it need to be heated?
What kind of portable container do you keep it in?
Best type of sprayer to use with it, will a garden sprayer work?
Any ideas on how to keep it heated?
Any tips or hints on using this product?

thanks

Type 1 needs to be heated.

I've used a few different types of portable cans. Some have a heating element similar to a kettle that goes into the fluid to heat it up. This is the best type, the element gets it very hot very fast. The containers are usually pesitcide type containers that you pressurize by pumping.

The second type I've used is heated by what appears to be a battery blanket. The battery blanket can't generate the type of heat you need to really blast through the ice.

My only real tip is the hotter the better. You can use the fluid at room temperature (15C) but it's a lot less effective than at 60C (designed temp).
You need a lot more fluid at 15C. So with a small portable container it becomes important to get it hot enough to require as little fluid as possible.

Most sprayers have adjustable nozzles. I've found that a spray rather than a mist works best. The smaller droplets cool more before hitting the ice and carry less heat.

A small fertilizer bottle of type 1 is useful even unheated to remove a light frost like from cold soaking on a King Air sized aircraft. One place I worked had a battery blanket duct taped to the outside that really helped it's effectiveness, bus as endless said it won't be adequate against a large amount of ice, it's great for frozen brakes though.

Kilfrost 50:50 mixture needs to be heated to 140F to 180F, otherwise, we weren't allowed to spray.

Thanks all for the responses.

"Endless", where do you find a sprayer that has an element for heating. Great idea, however I looked at a couple stores like UFA and Acklands, but couldn't find. Any idea who makes it or where I can find it?

A place like Acklands or Princess auto should have what you seek. Look for the steel heavy-duty sprayers. These can be equipped with a couple of battery blankets and a insulated blanket over it all to keep it warm. We keep a few plugged in at the hangar 24/7 and they're plenty warm enough, and they'll stay warm for a few hours in the back of the plane too.

A really good idea for you if you are interested.
If you have a hotel room, fill you bathtub with as hot as you can get water and then place your bug sprayer/de-ice bottle in the water and let it sit untill you have to leave. That is the best way to keep it warm if you have a hotel room.

treehawk: I'm not sure where you would go about buying the element insert. It's definately the way to go. You can get the stuff more than twice as hot as a battery blanket, and it's many times faster heating up too.

By many times faster, how fast are talking here? like, if you pull this tin out of the back and plug it in, 3/4 full, how long until it's piping hot?

under 5min to hot, and 10min to near flashpoint as i remember, it's been a few winters though. The blankets just don't the fluid hot enough for my liking. The heat element gets it scary hot if you so desire.
