Data Recovery
So I accidentally deleted several files ("perminatley" - not to the recyle bin).
One of the files I deleted was (of course) my electronic log book in .xls format along with a few other imporant files. My paper log is up to date (minus a month and a half), but re-creating an electronic log is out of the question.
So - I've tried some freeware programs that I googled without much sucess. Any suggestions for free/cheap programs for data recovery before I bring this puppy back to the shop?

Been there done that. I got a bunch of programs from http://www.download.com
to recover files but they only show you what can be recovered, to actually claim the files back you have to purchase the program. I really did search a lot too.
50 bucks for bein stupid, canucky, sorry...hope you can re-claim your info.

Works well. Problem with installing something now is that it may overwrite where the deleted files are now. Then you're really SOL.
Lesson is backup, backup backup...

Should you fail to recover your files in the end, I can send you a copy of my Excel logbook setup. It has a couple of summary tables, as well as a report page that gives you all the airports visited, all the names listed, and all the aircraft flown by registration with the number of entries for each.
Let me know if you'd like a copy.
Goodbye and good luck,
Louis

No, you can recover data from a keydrive. The absolute most important thing to do is stop writing to the drive immediately and until you have your data back.
The wiki has some good information: http://shsc.info/DataRecovery
You can daisy-chain freeware/shareware/trialware programs to get everything back.
