Contractors paid less than Permanents. Is this true?

Post by Snips »

Hello all. AME just arrived in Montreal from the UK. Interested in contracting. Was told by an agency here that contractors get paid less than Permanent staff. Is this true? First time I've heard of this anywhere in the world. What would be the point of contracting if this was the case? Any one out there confirm this please. Would be grateful to hear what you have to say. Many thanks

Never heard of that before. If you are making less then the Perms. then I suggest finding a different agency. Contract wages in Canada are a reflection of the industry here. Poor to say the least. Especially out east, Quebec included.

This is aline from an agency. If you work directly for the agency you sually make less so they can make more. If you go to the place that needs the staff you wil get more. A licensed M2 enginer on typ betwen $30-$45.licensed not endorsed $25 and up all depending on experience and the place.
Right noiw the places paying these rates would be.
Air Transat A-310 trying their own C checks
Skyservice FBO Heavy checks on Business Jets
M-Jet Montreal Jet Center Mods, SB's checks on Bombardier products
Exceltech Air Canada RJ-700 interior mod contract and others
Inflight Canada : Virgin A-320 interior mod
Premier Avaition(Trois Riviere) "C" checks on various types

If you work for an agency you will most likely be placed at these places and maybe Bombardier.
Lots of work in Montreal if you are skilled and licensed you should have no problem finding something.

Good luck.

M2 but no endorsements. Guess it's a bit of a catch 22 in a way. Need to get a permanent contract to get an endorsement course etc. We'll see what the new year brings. Thanks for the info gents. Happy Christmas and New Year to you all.

Im used to getting 35+ a/hr, 50+ a/day perdium, accomadation, all transport to/from. My endorsements have'nt been releative to what I work on, but Im not a drunk/ into drugs, show up on time everytime, don't break shit, and don't dogfuck on the job.
I've seen seen several recently who do just that, and still manage to bounce around from job to job . But they eventually have disappeared .
I think if one is generally competent, and gets(not an idiot) along with coworkers, you wont have to be dependent on an endorsement(s)for securing cntract work, although it's definately a plus if you have them.
