Blown Juggs, been there a few times. Pay at TMA sucks nowadays, Captains in training are making less than $2K. That is for people doing an upgrade with no -6 PIC time. Tops out at about $3800, paid for time in and out. They will work you 6 days a week and make sure you are always maxed out on duty and flight time.
The only local entertainment is the Captains bar in the airport hotel. Living conditions are shared apartments, and it's pretty much cheaper to eat out than cook for yourself. If you enjoy diving or other watersports, you will get limited time to enjoy it. Maintenance was terrible the last time I was there.
On the good side, it's 30C most days, the scenery will blow you away (for the first couple days anyhow) and there's tour guides galore who are just as homesick as you..

Twotter,
Thanks for the reply, just looking for an honest opinion to help me make my mind up.
I've been watching this site for awhile and I'm all for a bit of humor but sometimes the comments on here sound like there coming from a bunch of retards instead of trained professionals ( or whatever pilots are supposed to be )
Cheers,

Like the above said its an experience, one to look back on in the future.
You'll be time maxed, the planes will be broken a fair bit, saw 6 engine failures/precautionary shutdowns in my 6 months there, you'll wake every morning to prayer call ~5 am ish, but dont worry you'll already be walking to work at that time.
And you're time off will be extremely limited, some of us would surf off Male but its rare and besides you'll be wiped most of the time.
Catching the 5 am dohni (20 person ferry) flying almost 9 hrs with 20 sectors (logged) and the 645pm home leaves not much time even for a beer when you've got to do it all again tomorrow.
That said, it was an awesome experience and I'm glad I went. Go.

Go for it! Some guys hate it the day they get there.....others, I sometimes wonder if they'll ever leave. From what I'm hearing now a days, if you're an experienced DHC-6 driver on floats then Maldivian Air Taxi (Borek) is your best bet (offering more money). If not, TMA will tend to take guys with a bit less experience and put them in the left seat. Making considerably less than the 'experienced' DHC-6 drivers.
That said, it definitely ain't all about the money. It's an awesome experience and a definite eye opener to different cultures, scenery, and climate. You'll work for your money......but that doesn't mean life's a bitch.

Well I'm here right now and have only been here a few days so first impression can be deceiving. No doubt both companies are busy with no shortage of flying. Both companies are short of staff but I have to disagree on the maintainence. From what I have seen so far, I am quite impressed with it. No doubt the salt works its magic on the metal but it seems they keep a handle on it.
Lots of white sand and the accommodations are fantastic. Share a 2 bedroom apartment with an old friend. Each have our own rooms with washroom, showers etc. Cleaning staff come in every second day and we just hired a lady for $40 a month to do our laundry. So far so good! I may have a different opinion in a few months but I don't think so!!
Juggs come on over and I'll buy you a beer. Just applied for my liquor permit so will have a good supply when you arrive. Good thing my room mate already had his so the fridge was stocked when I got here.

OK Twotter I'll do that for you! As far as the pay goes, both operations are paying about the same. No doubt they will try and low ball you and if you are willing to take what is first offered well they will be the winners. Remember everything is negotiatable and it all depends on what you have to offer. The real winner are the Maldivian Pilots and that is because of the Expats and the salaries that had to be paid to get people to come over here. Right now a Maldivian Captain is making more than a local Doctor so they have a pretty good life. Imagine what the wages would have been if they would have started with Maldivian Pilots and not required the Expats.
