I always loved the jobs are "out there" line. Where is "out there"?
The US is heading into a recession, so it's not the US.
Asia typically gives SO slots to their cadets. Cathay you need a lot of time and it's pretty tough to get in.
Europe... looks better but without an outrageously expensive JAR license and an EU work permit, things ain't easy. Low time pilots are a dime a dozen in Europe too...
So please be more specific man! "Where"????????? Don't just say "Out there"....

No. Its 1500 hours for an ATPL. Therefore you'd need to get three 500 hour guys together.

JAR is taking over. It's not going away... other way around...
Canada should switch to JAR or go FAA 100 percent.
A Canadian CPL is basically worthless outside of Canada.

Go ahead and tell me how they won't take Canadians or won't take you with less than 1000 hours and won't etc., but be prepared to prove it. Especially you Kelowna Pilot - how many have you tried?
PM me if you want someone to hold your hand.

OK, I'll go ahead and tell you how they don't take canadians with 1000 hours and ATPL exams done. Go to their website and click on cockpit crew, and then notice how it's divided into Indian nationals and Expats. Then you will see how the only jobs for expats are DE Captains and Training Captains. FO positions are only available for Indian nationals. I do know a couple of folks who came over from India, did their training here, got an instructor rating and some time, and are now back home flying 37's. If you don't have the citizenship or the experience, you're not getting a job there, end of story.

Hahahaha..... You got egg on your face on that one...
Basically unless you're a high time Jet Captain, the opportunities overseas are very limited. Wish it weren't so.
So stop dreaming and get back on that ramp and start building that character up and proving your work ethic....

Why do you think you're hearing all that indian accent on the radios?? They're all over the GTA flight schools, even up in guelph, you hear them on the west coast everywhere, and even in ywg they are heard. Harv's must be having a blast with them.
They are mostly rich kids from india, come here and get their licences, then go back home, pay for the type rating, and sit right seat on one of those narrow bodies.
For Canadians? well, there is work overseas, most likely not on a jet, unless you got some decent time under your belt.
You won't be cracking the Middle Eastern market unless you got some good time, and I'm not talking caravan time (unless you're going to fly caravans in the u.a.e. which by the way has around 8 new ones there).
You can try africa, but that's going from one bush to anotther.

Hey steady there big fella some of us have van time and some people think it valuable,i just wish the heavies valued it as much as i do.

The licensing body in India (called the DGCA) has passed a rule allowing expatriate first officers onto flight decks. As you folks well know, there is a huge shortage of pilots in that country. Even though there are "many" Indians training in the West, these trainees are finding it a real nightmare to convert their Western licenses to the Indian equivalent (red tape, corruption, archaic examination system etc.). But as an expat, one does not have to go through that process.
Yes, 1000 hours and a type rating are the minimum requirements now for a direct entry first officer. No time on type required to apply. Whether companies would actually offer you a position with no operational experience on type is a different story......it all depends on demand and supply!
In regard to the previous post about Jet Airways, HR has not updated their "Careers" section in quite a while. This new law was passed a month ago and so there is some catching up to do.
Cheers

I was by no means belittling the mighty van, nor the experience guy/girls get on it.
let me rephrase, you won't crack the Middle East market with light prop time.

Thank you Like2fly. These guys are so busy telling the world how things don't work that they sit in their puddle-jumpers and never get anywhere. A case of beer says they will all be on this forum next spring, scrabbling for float jobs and right seats on Navajos.
Like I said, Kelowna pilot, where is the evidence that you tried? Instead of spending all your time on YouTube, why don't you read about the rest of the world? You are very quick to believe the naysayers on no evidence, why don't you believe me with positive evidence?
Famous last words: "Apply for every job that you want. Don't believe the 'requirements,' apply for every job you want. Everything."
That was my last post. If you are too lazy or stunned to further yourselves, I can't help. Maybe some of you will thank me some day.

By all means, go ahead and apply. But be very careful if you put money up front for a type rating before you have a job. You could very easily loose your money.
Best of luck.

I'm back, but only to stick this in your ears:
"Here is an authorative estimate of the number of pilots needed by CX.
"New aircraft mean more new pilots for CX and our Flight Operations team is continuing to work hard on recruitment. Last year we hired 130 new pilots - a mixture of Second Officers and direct entry First Officers. This year we will recruit in the region of 180 and that number is likely to rise to 250 in 2007. ICAO's recent decision to raise the working age for pilots from 60 to 65 will give us a little bit of gain in this area."
They are asking people who haven't heard from them for 3 or 4 yrs to update the CV. Everyone needs pilots now!"
This is only one airline: draw your own conclusions.

XS bank, I'm curious where are you working now?

Just a few thoughts.
First of all you don't need to go half way across the world and pay 30g,s for a 737 PPC to get on with CX. They do interview canadian pilots who started their careers by flying navajos up North.
CX is an exceptional company. There are however some airlines oversas that treat their employees like crap. There is a shortage out there, but part of the reason is because some people don't want to work there. I would be a bit skeptical about a company that asks for a PPC. If they can afford to expand and buy brand new aircraft, they should be able to afford to pay for your training.
Yeah I guess flying a 737 in India would be cool. Definetly good time and experience. However, there is nothing wrong with flying navajos, metros, King Air, Pilatuses, etc up north either. that is good experience as well.
I fly for an airline now, I must say I am having a blast. However, looking back I did enjoy my time up North as well. I don't think I would have had it any other way.
Whatever you decide to do, Best of luck.
