Rampie Vs. Pilot Pay

Post by anywaiss »

just curious how many of you out there have worked or work for a company that pays their rampies more than their starting FO's / pilots.. like many, i took a pay cut when i went from a ramp to flying position when i first started... i've even heard of most companies paying starting FA's more than starting pilots.. why is it so fucked up like this.

well...at our company the pay structure was set for f/a's based on an expected "X" number of hours, then it turned out that the airplanes flew a shit load more than expected....which equals...wait for it..more pay.

I didn't work the ramp, I looked hard and lucked out and my first aviation job was flying-and yes the wages were less than I was making as a room service waiter/accounting pleib/diesel mechanic/etc-but I enjoyed the job a hell of a lot more. Why is this topic continually beaten to death?. It's not just aviation, many people are working longer/harder and receiving less. If you're looking for good return on your effort, get a skilled trade. :!:

Worked for a well known "YVR based smaller Airline" ramp many moons ago, was comparing with another about our T4 and what we earned in the previous year by the water cooler. A SHORTS 360 F/O that had been there longer than either of us had on the ramp butted in and said how much did you make? Jesus H Christ @#$@# #$% #$%%#$% then said "Good for you guys but thats shit, if you got on flying you would take a paycut! " then walked away and started chatting to some of the other pilots.

maybe things have changed but it does happen

I guess the point being missed is that for the Pilot it is a starting wage and for the ramp attendant it is his top wage (except for contractual increases)

Take trucking for example (I only use it because I know a couple who do it). Something like that they train for, get their AZ so they can work and make $$ because they need it, as with tonnes of other professions. Then with flying, you have 18 y/o's (NOT all, but Ive met ALOT) who dont know what money is, get their 30-50K training paid for by Mom and Dad, go into the work force and would do anything to fly, even for nothing...because Mom and Dad have the survival money.

There aren't many professions who dont see an ROI within a couple years. To have to bust your nuts and take a pay cut to fly...well, I believe its thanks to the little punks who think of money as nothing more than a medium of exchange and not a necessity (sp) for survival. Id punch the phuck who offered me a flying position after ramp IF i took a pay cut.

Another way to look at this...How many hours were you working during the month while on the ramp, how many of those hours were paid at staight time and how many were paid at an overtime rate. How many days off did get in that month.

Now compare that to your flying job...how many days off are you scheduled for? How many hours did you work? Blah Blah Blah...its all relative.

SUNWEST AVIATION $10000 a year more. I know that for sure for sure. That is not including the overtime i used to get there. I was making fat coin on the ramp there.

So tell me, who here didn't know the pay sucked starting out in this industry? Oh, that's right, everyone believed the line of horsesh!t the flight clubs and colleges fed them about the "pilot shortage". "You too can be on a 777 in no time". Gimme a break. We all signed up for this.

As for rampies making more than entry level pilots, that is not right but I know I wouldn't want to go back to the ramp for more money. If you want to drive truck or work at whatever for more money, power to ya buddy, I'll stick with flying. :D

Pilots are whores, that might be a fact. Another fact is that the whores I know that are worth anything charge accordingly.

Blame yourself if you're not happy making what you make wherever you are. If you're worth it, get out and prove it. Otherwise, gear up, flaps up and shut up.
