Luggage security lax during Pearson labour dispute: report

Passenger luggage was not properly screened — and sometimes not screened at all — during a labour dispute last October at Toronto's Pearson International airport, CBC News has learned.

In the four days following Thanksgiving, airport screeners working for the private security company GARDA were on a work-to-rule campaign, hand-searching all carry-on luggage and creating long lines of passengers.

The screeners say their managers took over to clear the lines, allowing about 250,000 passengers to rush through with minimal or no screening.

In a letter to Transport Canada, several workers quoted their managers asking: "Why are you searching bags?"

Their letter went on to say managers "wanted us to rush through the screening procedures."

An investigation report by Transport Canada says the "security screening process was circumvented … in some cases it was abandoned altogether."

The report says that on Oct. 10, no bags were searched and X-ray images were ignored.

On Oct. 11, "strollers were allowed through the screening point without being searched," the report said.
'Gross violation'

It also said that managers speeding up lines "constituted a gross violation of pertinent legislation" and "severely compromised the travelling public."

Federal regulations stipulate that at least 25 per cent of carry-on luggage must be searched by hand.

Officials from GARDA declined to comment.

Security expert James Lewis said it was only by chance that a disaster was diverted.

"If terrorists had known that in those three days that their baggage wasn't going to be searched, that would have been bad. But fortunately, it looks like people lucked out and no one happened to be testing the system right at that moment."

A spokeswoman for the Canadian air transport security authority — the federal organization that oversees airport screening — says in fact all passenger luggage was properly checked during that October work slowdown.

However, she said, she has not seen the Transport Canada inspection report.

Sources say Transport Minister Lawrence Cannon is aware of the situation but is refusing to comment.

Regardless of what they do for security to fight terrorism the same addage applies to why George Bush and most politicians are in power....

If you're not east indian or a dumb blonde you can't work as a screener.

Just demonstrates "False Security".

The illusion of security at an airport is akin to a lock on a bag, it's meant only to dissuade honest people.

Airport security gives the overall public the warm fuzzy feeling their interests are protected. It's a last defense, at the very most, real security would only be achieved by implanting a chip in all our brains that would report nefarious thoughts and acts...

I don't even know why they advertised that. It's nice to know, but if some jackass wants to try something, they'll know it's a good time to try when the less than high school educated security screeners think they're working too hard for too little money.

90% of the world is overworked and underpaid, but screeners supposedly keep bombs off of airplanes. SO DEAL WITH IT AND DO WHAT YOU'RE PAID TO DO

You want REAL security on an aluminum tube? The Toronto lefties aren't gonna like it much, but ...

Don't search anyone. Instead, as pax are boarding, issue pistols to pax who are qualified in some way (eg taken a firearms course) which are surrendered during de-boarding after arrival.

Then the next idiot that stands up and hollers that "Allah is great" and waves a box-cutter gets severe lead poisoning.

Now, back to your regularly-scheduled Starbucks chocolate-covered coffee beans ...

The Illusion of security....

In Teterboro about 2 months ago I was clearing customs inbound to pick up passengers.

Upon shutting the engine down 6 customs officers plus a dog unit approached the airplane.

Apparenntly the dog was new and this was just a random check and also to give the dog some practice. Fair enough, except it made me nervous when she went onboard the plane and planted some drugs under the seat

So I was speaking with another agent while this was going on and he said its part of Homeland securitys new plan of increased checks. I said well that is good I guess, are you planning on nabbing more criminals ?

He says "No, we are just creating more of a presence so people feel safer when they see us out and about".

So to sum it up then you aren't really doing anything !! Brutal that they admit openly that they are practically useless

I can't think of a better way to do things but Hedley might be on to something
