Tips for probation period?

Post by kai »

I am new to the industry (fresh grad). I am wondering what employers look for during your probation period. Since I am a total newbie, I'd expect that they know that we don't work really fast or that we may ask for help alot. What other things do they look for during this period?

Thanks

Put simply, Big Ears, Big Eyes and a small mouth.

Everybody will know you're an apprentice. Expect some of the older guys to play a few jokes on you.

Don't be afraid to ask questions, if you don't know, there are no stupid questions, but there is a myrade of stupid answers. Check the manuals, they tell you how it should be done. Watch the senior engineers, they'll show you how its done.

And never take yourself too seriously. Be serious about the quality of your work, and you'll do just fine!

They already know you don't know anything so they (Engineers) are there to teach you...what they can't teach is work ethic so if you moan and groan when they ask you to do a task it looks like you are lazy, even if you are thinking to yourself the only reason he asked me is because it's raining outside, or because it's a crappy job....well your probably right BUT I will say this it's nothing engineer hasn't done 10 times in the same conditions already.
What they are fishing for is your character and how you handle situations.

and lastly have fun, joke around with guys...they will most certainly play tricks on you and raz you a bit but it's all in good fun and before you know it you'll be one of the crew.

good luck and be safe!!

O.k. #1
-new apprentice1 comes to work.
-stands there waiting for somebody to tell him what to do.
-works there for 6months same crap, but doesn't break anything, waste of O2 production manager thinks he/she is an awesome aprentice.
Crew chiefs - annoyed

Now #2
-app. 2 comes to work
-has previous exp. on type (enough to identify something wrong), and on other mechanical things...but stubborn.
-carries on like he/ she knows it all, but gets the job done quick
-tells nitpickey pilot to F-off when piddley snag mensioned
-Waste of O2 production manager doesn't even hear about it because app.2 is slightley able
Crew chiefs annoyed, but glad somebody told the pilot

Now #3
-Newf app. 3 comes to work
-no exp. on anything, not even a dirtbike or car or snowmobile
-ask lots of questions, smile doing the dirtiest jobs, take a while doing certian jobs
-when questioned on why it takes so long, Anwsers, "i'm not satisfied with how i did that so I redone it 'till I was satisfied with it"
-Waste of O2 production manager is specifically told about the quality of work but sluffs it off because its not interesting.
Crew chiefs pleased because production manager is a useless tit

Heres the catch...

App. 1 learned from app. 3, but app. 2 is still arrogant, but who do you think moved on without having to ask for a reference.
Crew chiefs pissed because they lost the best app's

Hopefully that will give you an idea of how to go about being an apprentice. Just remember "time is a factor, but safety is more important"

#1 - Know how to make a decent pot of coffee. (Even if you don't drink the stuff)

#2 - Don't be the guy who rushes out to talk to the pilots at every opportunity. (Avoid them if you can, they will try and dump bullshit on you and you should probably get 2 or 3 months under you belt before you tell the Chief Pilot what a stupid cunt he is. )

#3 - Try and look busy. (It seems to give most "Boss Types" a hard-on, plus it lessens the chance of someone dumping a shitty job in your lap.)

I hope you get enough weeks for EI before you get laid off.. That company has a pretty bad rep for hiring big and laying off the same.. They just don't seem to be able to keep contracts..

well they are pretty much into a c130 contract that is going fine, as well as an Alaska contract. The pace is picking up for more and more jobs, after 9/11. Plus they are giving us alot of training. I asked a few ppl i knew there, and they are not getting or have gotten the same training that we are getting. i.e. fuel tank entry, fall protection, etc.

The company is not going out of it's way to give you that training, it's required by law..

I don't think man/scissor lift training or fuel tank entry training is something they need to give by law. Shouldn't those be optional? For instance, if you haven't had the training they can simply just say don't do/operate that?

I am just wondering...

While I don't think scissor lift training is required or necessary, I do know that fuel tank entry is. You are correct that they cannot require you to go in without training, but realistically, I'm sure as a new apprentice, you will spend a bit of time in there. They do it for a reason and it's not because they are such great people..
