job for low-timers in canada?

Post by helikopterpilot »

Hi!

I'm currently working towards my CPL in the US, and will have about 170hrs when finished, shared between R-22 and Shweitzer 300cbi. Also have a IR-rating.

I wonder if there are any possibilities to get a job in Canada, permanent or seasonal employment with that low hrs?
What sort of job would be possible to get?

Are there any low-timers here on the forum which has recently got a job, who can give me some good advices of what to do?

Great forum! :D

Hello,

There are plenty of jobs for low-timers out there these days, some better than others, but as Out of Control says, most will start on the ground. The only problem is, there are also lots of low-time pilots competing for them.

The first issue is a work permit in Canada, if you can get your hands on one, and are interested in "utility" type flying, then Canada is for you... Be aware however, that competition is fierce for all these spots, and with many you may not fly for a year or two, particularly in British Columbia. The demand in Alberta is high, so the movement there tends to be better on the low end.

There is a good website put out by HAC that list all the operators, I highly recommend you look at it and make contact with as many of the CP's as you can during the winter. That way you'll have an idea of what they're looking for, and when the time comes for you to drive around to visit them all, you'll already have introduced yourself.

Good luck,
