Edmonton Flying Club Memorys
Was at the EFC the other day and it seems to have lost some of it fun side and is now very boring and business like. Does anyone have a fovorite EFC memory.
Mine would have to be a fire extinguisher fight that ended up with a chair being broke from bing tossed down the front stairs.
Another would be drinking Gin on the patio and getting yelled at for attemping to throw a party on the hangar roof?
Anyone top that one?

Roger on the gin, sinjin that was you?
Yeah when I first started there back in the 90's it was a pretty cool casual place that just seemed to tank after a clusterflop of bad decisions.
They've done some great stuff like getting the online booking up and... well that's all that really comes to mind. Loved being a part of the atmosphere then and went on several flights just because a couple of us would be hanging around one night when somebody says "This sucks lets go to YBW." So we went and had fun and you know who you are even hooked up with that honey on her commercial x-c.
Now the mentality is more like, I'll do that for a $. The members lounge was great to hang out in before class or do your flight planning, they just needed to put a little money in it and it would have been absolutely phenomenal. But now that's been leased to the CHED rotorheads along with what seems like most of the hanger space for club planes. Last time I was there I was surprised they weren't stacking them two high to fit them all in.
Let's face it guys the uniform idea was really stupid, like it much better when you were casual/business casual. Professional yet fun and personable, for those of us that attended past grade 3 it was like your favorite teacher in jr high. And no offense but the instructors looked like major dorks wearing different types and colors of poorly made mismatched shoulderboards and I was so relieved to see them go with just the shirt. Even then to point of a uniform is to be uniform, if I'm not mistaken. Black or navy, brown or green pants looked wayyy out of place.
Then somebody chased all the geezers (I use the term affectionately) from the cafeteria. I totally got off listening to their stories of shooting down german airplanes over the english channel in 1995, or how they wore an onion on their belt in the 30's because that was the style at the time. Now whenever I'm there it just seems dead.
Alot of this can be credited to E-duh-monton Airports for jerking around all the tenants and the surrounding businesses but that's another topic entirely.
Oh, then there was the issue of customer service tanking. No charts, maps, books, publications but plenty of knicknacks. I'm sorry but a 1/30 scale P-38 will not help me navigate my way through NDB approach, keep the toys in a toy store. I think they've finally fixed that problem but having what you need or ordering it in still seems to be an issue.
It looked promising when they were moving some of their old fleet but haven't done enough to replace it. Most of the planes are still good just thro some new radios and paint on them and they'll be fine for another 10-15 years. I still don't even think the lighting on the BE-76's is legal for night.
Keep in mind it's the people that make it special and fun, and it's the little things you remember. If they got the right manager, and people on the board then I'm sure we would see EFC become most of a social place again. But the members need to do their part, if an event is organized do your part and attend, even for a couple minutes show your face and your support. Back around 2002 a couple "member nights" were organized but I guess the turnout was disappointing. It takes time and money to make it work so as a member you have to make it worthwhile for the people involved in organizing the event.

got an idea
what if we were to get a air ralley organized. one of the earily ones with the flour bombing and a rocking hangar dance (well drink fest anyway). I call on all of the old boys and see if we can spice up the place. I wounder what the reaction would be today if 10 people showed up with cases of beer in hand and found a pllace to get drunk?

there were more than just the instructors puking. There was a certian pilot, that now flys with Canadian North throwing empty beer cans at the DJ. People having sex in one of the old brifing rooms. A fist fight out side between a EFC student and a Centenial student. Ahh the good old days, I still think that a group of us old timers should show up there with some boose and get yelled at for pissing of the balconey. Who is with me

Sounds like a grand old time! We members should exercise our membership and plot to take her back.
I was surprised to see food being served at lunch in the cafeteria a while back on a Saturday. That's awsome! How do the lunch guys make any dough?! Does Shell and Esso FBO staff come over for grub?
Yes, a great big spring piss up for the whole YXD aviation community seems in order.
Love their cute little Katana things, should get checked out on the sporty thing sometime. Pitty they didn't have a Citabria. They would add a level of competition with Namao. Bet I know where one could be purchased for a good price.
Yeah, dump those C-152s, get another Katana thingy, canabalized one of the Dutchess, and maintain and purchase C-172s, and one Citabria.
