TMA - Trans Maldivian Airways
Whats the scoop on these guys? Have any of you worked for them? Is it a good operation? Is owned by a Canadian? Tell me all you can! Thanks!
TMA is Maldivian Owned and operated I believe. Never worked for them myself, but know plenty of people that have. Most of the F/O positions go the Maldivian pilots, and some of them are now in the left seat as well. From what I understand there are fewer jobs available to Canadians now than there were in the past and most that are hired usually have a few thousand hours and time on type. However, in the last couple of years they have hired Canadian F/O's and given them Captains upgrades on the Twin Otter. I think pay is something in the neighborhood of $4000/mo. U.S, and rotations are 2 or 3 Months in with 1 month out.
What kinda aircraft do they have?Offset wrote:TMA is Maldivian Owned and operated I believe. Never worked for them myself, but know plenty of people that have. Decent company, it's come a long way in the last five years (especially maintenance). It's true, most of the entry-level positions go to Maldivians with a fresh FAA license, but every now and then they need someone and no Maldivians are to be found.
Until recently, there was a hard and fast rule about having 2000 hours total time, 1000 on floats and 250 on a Twin Otter to go directly to the left seat, however at least one person has been hired as a captain without any previous Otter time (however, he did have a lot of float and multi time.)
Rotations are 2 months in 1 month out as a captain, 3 and 1 one for a co-pilot, and you have to do 5 months your first rotation if you're new to the company.
They just reinstated a 5% pay cut that happened after 9/11, so monthly salaries, paid 12 months per year (in tax free US$) are:
co-pilots: $1735 (unless you have very little time, in which case its progressively less)
captains: $3000 1st year, $3500 2nd year, $4050 3rd year (they've added a 4th and 5th payscale, but amounts are undetermined as of yet).
These amounts are pretty firmly set, unless they're desperate for guys or you're a very skilled negotiator.
Everything (nearly) is paid for while you're in the country (apartment, utilities) and you generally overnight 4 nights a week at a resort (so food is mostly taken care of).
They have 15 Twin Otters, and supposedly ATR-42's are coming, but if you know anything about aviation, you won't believe it until 3 weeks after you see them on the ramp and they'll find cheap Indian labour to fly the 42's anyway.
Easy job, no real bosses, decent money. I'm starting to miss it already.....
The moral of the story is....if you have a little Twin Otter time, go over there for a while, enjoy it, and don't let the little Third World things bother you (the reason 98% of people get pissed off and quit). If you're just starting out and you want to fly in the right seat, Borek (Maldivian Air Taxi) is the easier option.

good company to work for, 16 twotters. 1 100, 15 300's 2 ATR's reciving c checks and a SJ30-2 to come off the assebly line. Also a major driver for the 400 series too be built (borek being the other). They were looking for people two weeks ago for both the left and the right seats not sure if there done hiring for the peak season. You'll do 800 to 1000 hrs a season but if youre not in the left seat when you get here your behind every maldivian for an upgrade. Like airturd said easy job, you load and unload baggage at resorts (help the cabin attendant). At the base its all done for you. laundry done for you at the resorts at night so you always have a clean white shirt. Wife/girlfriend can live here while your here but u work 6 days a week and over night 4 so she needs to be able to entertain herself.
