I hate it when.... (rampie edition)
We had a "what pilots hate", now lets here what rampies REALLY hate from pilots.
I hate it when:
- pilots call in from like 200 miles out and then we have to try about 7 times to read back the message/fuel order". Call us when your closer or at least don't waste our time by doing a FULL callsign/call 7 times.
-pilot asks for the fuel truck to come to the plane and the pilot sits in the plane with the engine(s) on for 10 minutes while the truck is waiting. One company/plane is notorious for this.
- people who think they own the airport. They jump in the plane, fire up, throw the chocks over the fence and leave the carpets blowing away in the propwash, no call for marshallers.

I hate it when I call dispatch about 3x requesting a carpet with my ETA and still no marshaller or red carpet for my executive passengers..
when my aircraft is the only aircraft flying the next day and is buried behind a few king airs and a jet or two.
I could add more, but you get the idea, it goes both ways bub
Cheers

Jesses your dumb Haz, pour the warm beer on the cold pussy and enjoy the best of both." 1) warm beer

Do I have to tell you everything ??
The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

I'll pass one tip for dealing with pilots.
Be assertive, not a jackass, you know you're job and your rules so make sure they abide by them. That being said, it is the Captains airplane his decision on where to move an airplane.
You'll never teach good airmanship to some guys, what goes around comes around.
Pilots who treat rampies like sh*t tend to get treated like Sh*t, same goes for everything. A little respect by both parties goes a long way.
What do I hate pilots doing?
1.)Stopping the airplane engines running waiting for GPU, then putting their heads down without watching the marshaller.
2.)Forgetting to turn off the nose gear light.
3.)Bitching about airplanes blocking a push path, like we can at that moment in time do anything about it, we don't want to sit in the push tug freezing our arses off any more than pilots want to sit in the warm cockpit trying to meet a gate time in YZ.

theres plenty we could complain about but is it worth it?,one that ticks us off is pilot ego! higher than fl350. wake up!! alot of us are pilots here too! some of us here range from students to atpl.so alot of experience here.
even though were rampies and pilots too, we see both sides . we would not pull into an FBO and make demands beyond stupid.or waste the fbo's time with a gratuity fuel load (50 a/s) on a kingair!! come on!! ,my boss isnt here to run a charity,he has to pay us to do our jobs so we can try to give you your service in a timely manner. a little give on your part helps us to! should we be doing all the bending?and taking it where we dont want it?
were going to sit by and see where this thread goes

you do realize we actually USE that fuel? it's an alternate, a long taxi, a legal requirement, or a back up to bring you up to MGTO (especially good for medevac when a mid flight reassignement is common place) or for some poor sots, the difference between hitting the threshold or hitting the harbour! Sounds annoying, but it's your job! everything you do IS important to us, including 50 a side. I'll buy you a muffin next time i ask for a meager fuel load.Jet A wrote:...and make demands beyond stupid.or waste the fbo's time with a gratuity fuel load (50 a/s) on a kingair!!

thanks! its easy to say that . but i was taught show me dont tell me!!
ever been on the end of the stick when you get a new one ripped when you park someone in the wrong spot cuz its 10 paces to much to walk?

Calling at 11:15, asking to have the plane brought out at "a quarter to" and having them say you said 12:45....then after all that, they show up at 13:15.....
Asking the night before to be brought out at 9am, only to arrive at 8:45 and seeing 2 inches of snow on it already.
Watching your front gear twisted 20 degrees past limit cause the guy can't get the A/C positioned right.
....hearing "we were really busy" when you saw 5 out of the 6 guys working having a smoke and coffee for 20 mins beside a maint hanger while you've been waiting 30 mins past your call out time
Don't get me wrong...I totally appreciate the guys workin the ramp...much respect. Gave two guys a case of beer at Christmas. But that's for the guys who actually work. I hear constantly how much they hate their job and don't care....if you hate it that much....get another job...don't hate us and make our lives harder because you would rather be at home or somewhere else.

Sometimes I think it's a shame when I get feelin' better when I'm feelin no pain.

That's not impossible, as there are often places that you can land at but can't take off from at certain weights. Especially in charter, as people want to go strange places. Perhaps you should learn a bit about that so it doesn't sound so stupid when that situation happens to you again. Lots goes into calculating takeoff distance. Maybe it was a short runway, a contaminated runway, hot outside, high elevation, etc. My airplane, a corporate type jet, has accelerate stop distances that range from 11765' (and that's on a on a dry runway!) to 2115'. It's entirely feasible that we could fly for three hours to a destination that prohibits us from taking on any gas because of weight. Just something to think about. As for complaining about ramp charges... well that's all on him!MUSKEG wrote:How about when an aircraft arrives after a 1 hr 30 min flight, unloads 8 pax and then informs line crew he can't take any fuel because he will be overgross on take off. (Lear 45) And they wonder why there are ramp charges? Heard it with my own ears.

"ABC needs fuel. Or was that ACB?"
"What kind of fuel?"
"I don't know, they didn't say."
"What kind of plane?"
"Uh.. Don't know."
"Where is it?"
"I think it's on the ground, but I'm not sure."

on the calling 200 miles back - what's better, no call or a feeble call at 200 miles back? sometimes we
A)forget if we don't do it 200 miles back
B)get too busy within 200 miles (rarely - but it happens depending on the medical shite in the back and then the #2 [or #3] radio goes bezerk with info we may need to hear)
or would you prefer a call just as we are taxiing in? just wondering.
i find no matter what you do, some people just refuse to be happy and let the little things go.
in with anger, out with love..

When I worked at an FBO, I used to hate it when the pistons would taxi in and do their cool down in front of the doors.
As a pilot, I don't like it when your trying to do a quick turn and instead of helping unload, fuel or whatever else, the ramp guy stands next to you and gives you his verbal resume becuase he is "ready for the next step."
I don't mind listening and giving advice if we have a while to hold but when everyone knows your busting your ass to get airborne and keep on sked, I don't want to hear it.
Most guys are good for that across the country, 2 places with a few guys that really stand out though.

For the most part I find most flight crews get treated how they treat the fuel guys. Most customers we get are generally very good, but you get the odd one that just seems disturbed you are standing anywhere near them asking for a fuel load or what requirements they have,if any...Alot of our guys fly on the side whether privately,or some do have jobs flying on the side for whoever, and supplement there income with the FBO job.I have heard the guys on some occasions say ''remind me not to turn out like that'' when we get someone with a chip on there shoulder walking through.I would have to say that my biggest peeve is guys who think they should skip the line when getting fueled,if were busy and there are 10 other airplanes ahead of you, your #11 because the other 10 want it just as bad.If you ask over the radio if its possible to give you a quick turn we can look into it for you,if your just in a rush to ferry home and your empty and flow times are good,it aint gonna happen...If were not busy than no problem!

Shankdown. I didn't just fall off the turnip truck. Been doing this since Mid 80's. We have 7000 feet here and it was late fall (cool). Lots of pilots think fuelers are just that, but some of us were doing what your doing while some of you were still in diapers. In this case he either took off overweight or was lying. Period. If you don't need fuel I'm OK with that but don't make up some lame excuse because you can't be honest.
Due to the volume of gas we buy from our home base, it is usually cheaper for us to take enough gas for a round trip and just bite the bullet for the ramp fee.
It has never been an issue for us. If you want someone there to call you cabs and provide a lounge for your pax, you gotta give em a way to make cash. We are even authorized to tip the ramp guys out of our petty cash if they are really hustling to keep us on sked.
Because this is how we treat the ground crew, I find that the cabs are always waiting, the coffee is ready to go and there is always lots of ice.
