Is Buffalo Airways still a good place to go.............

Post by KAG »

Is Buffalo Airways still a good place to go if your a low timer?
I know they have lost some contracts, and so on. So I was wondering what is the expected time frame to jump into right seat? working conditions? schedule? Pay?

Cheers.

All the previous negatives are still there, plus reduction of the fleet with the sale of the C-46. So in a word: No. Not a great place for a newbie.

What's up KAG? Tired of the smell of kerosene? Craving the retro sounds and smells of round engines?

I cant see me turning in the flight status to work anyone's ramp. I have a friend who is looking to start their career, and buffalo was mentioned. Thought I'd ask.

Cheers.

P.S. I love the smell of kerosene. It's 100 LL I cant stand.

I would definitely steer clear....I think the average flying time rampies get is 1.0 every 2 weeks....I don't think that can justify the horrible work conditions since you will probably have to work the ramp (or courier driving) for over 2 years.

If you want to do the knife, Tindi is the place to go I think. I've had a couple of former students go there a couple of years ago. Worked the ramo 12-18 months and then on turbine machines.

did your buddy have a type rating on the dc4? if not that "cruise time" is worth nothing in the log book.

endless,
my classmate doesn't have type rating and I am aware that he can't log the time, i was just stating the fact that he was in the 'pit after only a week there. He is working the ramp and it is experience none the less. I'm not sure how long before they give him a seat.

Cheers.

If I was a drug dealer, thats how I would keep 'em coming back for more. A little taste, a little freebie once in a while just to keep 'em around.

But I'm not one though. And this post of mine is not suggesting Buffalo does business that way with recruiting staff. But some where, some time I am sure there are companies that may practice that style of conduct.

Which CLiff? There are two there C. Dyson (Crew chief), and Sabel (QA). So to answer your question, yes.

At least he never had to crawl out of the wreckage of a DC-4, cursing himself for not insisting that "No, a 45 gal drum of fuel is not a proper seat in an airplane."

Flynfiddle you definitely made the right choice, so what if it cost you a little time now, it'll be worth it later on when you are alive and violation free.

Anyone who walks by Buffalo and keeps going has made the best choice. Anyone who stays longer than a month is stupid...I lasted a few more...I must have lost my mind (and yes, I was stupid)....but when I did call it quits, no regrets...best choice I ever made...I feel sorry for the poor bastards that suck it up....it bites being everyone's bitch...Is that loser Ops manager still there-the one with the stuttering problem and twitching eyes...Man, if I could go back in time...

Bminus sounds like you are flying round engines, if so, and you enjoy what you are doing I wish you well. As with many pilots I also love the look and sound of the radial, and have spent many hours coddling the 985 and 1340. However, would I now trade my jet A burner for a piston, never, but thats a matter of preference. However judging by tha lack of maturity of your posts it sounds like you are to soon into your career to know either. I have had the night to sleep on your very first ever post, and I am still trying to discern whether it was out of jealousy, or just plain immaturity, but posters of your ilk, who seem to enjoy trashing others, make me wish we could all sometimes meet in person. By the sounds of it, FLynfiddle left the green and white , good for him, I like him already, but he also trashed us rednecks, well not so good. Where was I going wth this, oh yeah, how about a constructive post there bminus.

Wow Brew, those were some pretty strong words. When was the last time most people could write a DC-3, DC-4, or C-46 in their logbook? You must be a pretty tough fella, I don't know if I would call anyone who has or is working at Buffalo "stupid", them are fightin' words.

Working at Buffalo is not for everyone, as appartently you know, I think the people that choose to stick around there deserve a little bit more respect than that.

Working at Buffalo is not stupid...I was there for 3 years..left for Bluer Pastures..

I can look back and say there was some hard work, long days and nights, and some shitty times too. There were also many damn good ones. The guys there for the most part are great. They've made a lot of steps toward being more progressive in the last few years.

There were many people that left for the marroon while I was there..Flynn Fiddle or however it's spelled..sorry J..most of them weren't where they wanted to be , there were some morons..and some really good people..Mr. Fiddle there being one of the best.. It's never a bad thing to leave and be somewhere you like better.

All that said I'll always be able to look at my license and see DC-3 there..my first PPC and know I worked my ass off for it, I earned it, and I had lots of fun flying em...

Buffalo has it's positives and negatives but if you love radials it's worth it, or it was for me at least.

You can fly a radial farther than you can ship a Merlin.
