How easy is it to spot the traffic being pointed out to you, to follow on a visual approach, and what factors might affect its' visibility?

I would say it's always different, the scratches/bugs/dirt on the windshield also play tricks on you.
I haven't found a perfect time as you stated to pick the airplane out. What I usually do is look in the general direction of the reported traffic, and look for them accordingly to that time's conditions (i.e. sun, geography they are flying over, etc).
