Canadian Forces Aircrew Selection

Post by CF-151 »

Hey,

Just wondering if anyone can provide any details on the Aircrew selection testing that takes place in Trenton when doing the pilot application process for the CF.

Thanks,

Well in 2000 they had just received new atlantis sims if I remember correctly. I only had 65 hrs then as well. There were 4 of us in class with all kinds of backgrounds. 4 sim sessions. They basically want to see if you have a learning curve, how well you interact with others. Because you will be training to be an Officer, lots of leadership, very important.
If you become succesful from the sim, then you go and do numerous physical tests, eye testing, hearing, etc. If my mind recalls it was in Toronto at a big brown building. I cant remember what the abbreviation was (sorry). I enjoyed that bit. Even your shins are measured, to see if you can fit in the fighters.
After that if you pass, you are pretty much accepted and off to basic training in St.Jean QC. Check out bunnies while you are there.
Only 1 out of 4 passed in my class. Best advice give a 100% and BE YOURSELF, dont bullshit anybody, have a positive attitude. Have fun.

20/20 uncorrected, laser eye surgery is not allowed. And don't lie: CF optometrists can detect if someone went through laser eye surgery, and if we find out, you could face prosecution to the fullest extent of the law.

Went to aircrew selection during the summer of 2006. There were about 15 of us who were there at the start and if I remember correctly there were 6 that were offered pilot including myself, 2 offered nav. If there is one thing that will help you get through the sim rides it would be beneficial to go to a local flight school and book a few hours performing basic circuits on a sim. A few of us already held private/ commercial licences, but the others didnt, so don't let a lack of flying experience become a cause for concern.

As for the written aptitude tests, there are study guides available online for the USAF pilot/nav aptitude tests which prepare you for the types of questions you'll face in the written sections. The medical stuff you can't prepare for, so just enjoy your stay in toronto with the other candidates- you'll be sure to meet some great people. Other than that, if you are selected be prepared to wait for your official job offer as it takes a 'few' months!
Good luck!

Good reply Chester, the last bit of info I could pass on get a head start on your french. In less your bilengual. I went in as a DEO, education, education and education. You will need a degree as a officer. So if you have one great, that will cut down on your total commitment. I believe it is 7 years. If you dont have a degree, then you will be doing it on the military's dime, sweet gig, but you will pay it back with time served.
Like everything in life there is no free lunch, just pick a bistro that has a buffet with all the trimmings. Work hard, have fun BUT NO DRUGS, make sure you can pee into any cup they put in front of you. Cheers

Just to clarify thats 7 years after wings which right now is about 11-12 years, that could go up or down who really knows. The reason i bring this up is becasue i know a lot of recruiting centers tell recruits its 9 years regardless of training time.

I actually know someone who got caught with the laser eye surgery, they of course denied him (dont know why he would lie seeing as they have a machine that can show the good folks at drdc whether the surgery has been performed). But to my knowledge nothing happened, except he joined the army instead.
