• 80 hour ground school.

How long ago did the 80 hour requirement get put in to law. I was just on the TC website and 421.30 states 80h now.

It has actually been law since december 15 2006. My inspector told me that they were not going to enforce it untill it changed on the website.
We were doing well inexcess of 80 hours since since this change has been in the works since 1999.

Does anyone know what the new subject areas are, that should be covered under the additional 40 hours of ground school training? When I look at Transport's website, all I see is:

(3) Knowledge
(a) An applicant shall have completed a minimum of 80 hours commercial pilot aeroplane ground school instruction including at least the following subjects:

(i) Canadian Aviation Regulations,
(ii) aerodynamics and theory of flight,
(iii) meteorology,
(iv) airframes, engines and systems,
(v) flight instruments,
(vi) radio and electronic theory,
(vii) navigation,
(viii) flight operations,
(ix) licensing requirements, and
(x) human factors including pilot decision‑making.

thats gonna make for some repetitive ground school classes...really is there 80hrs worth of material to teach?

Of the 80hrs required does it all have to be learnt from a school or can some of it be self taught

Self study counts; but it must be signed off in your PTR by your instructor so you should talk to them about what they are looking for as a means of keeping track of your hours. Some instructors wont do this because they are signing purly on your word, and they have no way of knowing exactly how many hrs you did.
