Cloudair gone

Post by spafloats »

An unfortunate email from Dean Mortimer of Cloudair today to say they are no longer in business.

A sad day for float flying in southern Ontario!

Being based in Muskoka means that Dean only had 8 weeks to generate a year worth of revenue, and insurance for a fleet of amphib float planes is very expensive. Even though his guys fly their bags off for 8 to 12 weeks, his customers go back to Toronto for most of the year, and the planes sit from Labor Day until Canada Day. Dean is one of the most giving and honest people you will ever meet in aviation, it is a shame that more people won't get an opportunity to learn the art of float flying from him.
As a side note, the OC that Cloud Air holds is the oldest AOC held by a float plane operator in Canada. At least Dean should get some serious golfing in now!

Just received more information about the demise of Cloud Air, there is much more to the story. Sounds like some business partners took advantage of a guy who put a little too much faith in fairplay. What a dirty little aviation community around YQA...

It would worth exploring if there are other operators in the Caribbean or there abouts that have the same seasonal imbalances where an operator can move his equipment back and forth. OC's, C of A's and ownership issues aside.
