AME the trade that never really was and finishes last again

Apprenticeship Incentive Grant
The Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (AIG) is a taxable cash grant available to registered apprentices once they have successfully completed their first or second year (level) of an apprenticeship program in one of the Red Seal trades. For a complete list of trades in Canada that have a Red Seal trade designation, visit the Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program Web site.

Thats right boys and girls Aviation is in the dust again. Red seal trades get $1000 for completing the first year and another $ 1000 for completing the second year.

here is the link. Calling all you apprentices, there is still time to be a plumber and have some self respect.

Maybe AME will become a red seal trade instead of the federally run grope fest that it has become.

Doesn't look like it's any different on civvie street either. I'd like to say we should all throw down our tools for a day or two and see how much mayhem it causes but we're all too proud of what we do to do that. I wonder when the people that make important decisions will finally smarten up and realize how important AME's actually are...

Ya, HercRigger,we would never do that.(Throw down our tools). That's why the decision makers will never realize how imp.AME's are! But we can all imagine what an effect that would have on old moneybags owner! Can you imagine 2 day's without fixin'. Ah! Its nice to dream!HA!
We are aviation's best kept secret, no passenger wants to know that A/C break and need to be maintained. Those who do know don't want to admit it.Ever see that Rick Mercer clip at West Jet? Showed management, Agents, pilots and baggage/ground crew. No maintenance!
But we will continue doing what were doing because of the fame, glory and big money!

For some reason AOG injects a sense of responsibility to get it airborne in airplane mechanics....must be a natural defect.

While I agree that pride has a lot to do with not shutting down for a few days I also think that pay or lack thereof has a major influence as well.
The wages are so thin in many areas you can ill afford to loose days or two in pay.

I checked out the site for red seal trades. This is a non government organization that does testing and certification for trades in conjunction with provincial and territorial professional associations to standardize trades accross Canada. The idea the government has is actually a good one, they are using an infrastructure that is already established, therefore saving money and time. Unfortunately, aircraft maintenance does not fit into the Red Seal program since we do our testing through the government. I don't think this is a knock on our trade but more an oversight since we don't really fit in. It seems like the government rushed this program through because they promised to do this in the election. (What a concept actually doing what you promised in an election!!) I would like to suggest that we start a petion or letter writing campaign to the Service Canada Cabinet Minister to have aircraft maintenance included in the list for the apprentice grant. Anyone know how to do an electronic petion???

I think the point trying to be made isn't whether or not the government has a good idea, but why has aircraft maintenance been overlooked again? You should'nt have to start a petition of any sort to gain inclusion in a trade related program that is government sponsered.
It's like we're a none trade, or as the government classifies us "non-skilled". I guess airplanes fix themselves in their eyes. Bloody joke.

I would rather see a petition requesting that aircraft maintenance be classified as a skilled trade, as oppose to an " unskilled trade" .

FYI We are classified as a trade in the Career Handbook by Service Canada. "You should'nt have to start a petition of any sort to gain inclusion in a trade related program that is government sponsered." What's the point in crying about that, if you don't like the situation DO SOMETHING being bitter won't change anything.

On the petition front, I have figured out how to make the petition but I'm not quite sure what to write in the letter. This is what I have so far. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Dear Mister Solberg P.C., M.P.

We the undersigned request that the trade of Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (A. M. E.) be made eligible for the Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (A. I.G.)

The A. M. E. trade is listed in your department’s “Career Handbook” as a trade, so it seems quite reasonable that apprentices from our trade benefit from the A. I. G. program.
