Air Canada to Set-Up Cargo Subsidiary

In a filing Friday with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), Air Canada said it wants to establish a subsidiary for its cargo traffic, initially responsible for Air Canada belly cargo. The move is an indication that the formal steps in the airline's restructuring are underway.

The creation of Air Canada Cargo as a separate entity was part of Air Canada’s court-approved plan to emerge from bankruptcy protection, which has been cleared for Sept. 30. Under the plan Air Canada has created a separate airline, Air Canada Cargo, to market and sell the cargo space on the aircraft of Air Canada and its affiliates. It initially will not operate its own aircraft or hold its own Air Operator Certificate.

The president of Air Canada Cargo will be Claude Morin, currently vice president of cargo for Air Canada. On the company's board will be Morin, along with Air Canada President and CEO Robert Milton, Paul Létourneau, Air Canada's vice president and corporate secretary. The company will be set-up as a Québec corporation during the first weeks of September.
Wow, looks like Milton will get two bonus cheques next month.

So, who still thinks Air Canada will survive?

I'm torn over this one.

I want AC to survive because they employ so many people including a number of people I know; because they were the company I wanted to fly for when I was getting interested in flying (now, well?); because they are still Canada's best option for international travel and has brand recognition around the world.

I think we might be better off without AC because they are a beast crippled from their crown corporation days with all the union groups inherent in that. I think it would be easier to start from scratch to build such a company than to continue with all the baggage.

The restructuring is an attempt at a relatively clean slate, and they have managed to secure significant concessions from the unions. The unions are still there, though. There are still issues between AC and Canadian employees and between aircraft and salaries for mainline and Jazz pilots. Is this a clean slate?

I think I really want to see AC survive, but they have suffered along on the verge of self destucting for so long, sometimes you think it may be more humane for the vet to put the ol' dog down. Then again, with so many jobs on the line, isn't it worth fighting for? If you worked there, would you not want to see her survive?

Air Canada receives praise from the Hospital for Sick Children. Helping children is of major importance for Air Canada and in itself rewarding. But, we can’t help feel a little proud and pleased when our efforts are acknowledged. Most recently, the Hospital for Sick Children (otherwise known as Sick Kids) nominated Air Canada as “Donor of the Week” in recognition of the time and commitment we give to the hospital through such initiatives as our Kids’ Horizons program and our help with fundraising efforts. If you would like to read these kind words of appreciation, log on to http://www.sickkids.ca and click on “Special Friends” and “Donor of the Week.”

Gee how come I never read anything about WJ helping our society? Hmm it must be their total interest in their bottom line...But I digress

Off the top of my head, rebel, Westjet sponsors Hope Air(http://www.hopeair.org/hopeair/sponsors/?lang=en ), as does AC. There's no need for bashing.

On topic - I too, hope that AC survives. They're our national flag carrier, and do offer more international destinations than any of Canada's airlines at the present time. Not to mention the fact that my current job depends on them. If management can get its act together, I'm sure the "new" Air Canada will survive, and thrive.
Though, I still have a morbid curiousity to see how the aviation scene would cope without Air Canada. Would we see the true "air taxi" vision of NetJets come to reality in Canada? It'd be ineresting to see.

I hope it survives forever.. Not just another year..

But, seriously, who comes out of bankruptcy, and creates a new subsidiary with all the guys that recieved million dollar bonuses on the board and management team...

Watch.... I'll bet you anything, they'll get 2 bonuses(each) one from ACE and one from ACC, regardless of whatever financial "gains" the company will see.....

While all the other employees will sign off on concession left right and center...
