An Air New Zealand airplane on a domestic flight made a safe emergency landing on one engine in the southern city of Christchurch today.
The Boeing 737 airplane, carrying 73 passengers, was heading to the resort of Queenstown from the northern city of Auckland when it diverted to Christchurch after an apparent engine fault, airline spokeswoman Andrea Dale said.
Dale said the crew had to shut down one engine as a precaution after a warning light came on in the cockpit and immediately diverted to Christchurch. The airplane landed without incident, she said.
The event sparked a full emergency alert at Christchurch International Airport.
Airline engineers in Christchurch were inspecting the engine, she said.
The passengers would either be booked on other flights or be taken by bus to the ski resort, Dale added.
