When its out of your hands.
Had a completely new experience the other night, where for the first time in my life, things where completely beyond my control....
The other night I was woken up from a deep sleep by my bed shakeing. As I became more fully awake, I realised (to my supprise and shock) that it was infact an earthquake. All I could think was "The roof landing on my head is gonna hurt". Gladly it didn't, nor was there any real damage - it wasn't bad, a 4.0 as it turned out.
What I remember most was the sound - like constant rumbling of a distant thunderstorm. It was pretty cool.
Needless to say, im glad it was only minor, and I have a new found respect for the forces of mother nature.
Cheers.

Most earthquakes I've experienced were when I was asleep (please, no sex jokes). I'm a deep sleeper. I live in earthquake country, but the first one I actually experiences was surreal to me-- things just started moving gently, and I thought I was going crazy. It was a very light tremor.
A few months ago I was at the incredible Natural History Museum in London, UK. There they have a display about the catastrophic earthquake in Kobe, Japan-- the "live" videotape images from various convenience store surveillence cameras will not leave you indifferent on how helpless we can all be when the "big one" hits.

Aw C'mon PJ. No sex jokes?
That's gotta be a strange feeling KAG. I heard a story like that very recently from a pilot in a crew house who's bed shared a wall with the next door neighbor's. He awoke to the wall shaking...bang bang bang bang. He didn't mention a feeling of helplessness. More of disgust once he realised he was hearing the guy next door's headboard smash into the other side of his bedroom wall.

Woke up to a gentle earthquake quite some time ago with a bit of a bang bang bang on the wall...my daughters wall...i was rushing to get my bat to scare the son of a bitch out of my daughters room before i realized that everything was shaking...i'm an idiot
What is the difference between god and pilots?
God doesn't think he is a pilot!
God doesn't think he is a pilot!
Glad to hear u had the chance to experince that KAG. I would look at it as an inviting experince- provided I or anyone else didn't get injured. It gives anyone a quick reality check, makes you remember where u are and what we have to be thankful for. I hope I get to experince that and a whole lot more before my day. I look at it like this-"What doesen't kill me only makes me stronger. What makes me stronger, makes me able to deal with tomorrow better"

OK kids, well, today I was actually wide awake when I experienced the worst earthquake I´ve ever experienced-- 6.3 in magnitude. I was sitting by the pool with Mrs. Panama Jack, sipping a beer, when everything started shaking. I said to my wife "it´s an earthquake" and continued sipping on my beer, watching with fascination as the palm trees swayed and the ground seemingly turned to jelly (not beer related) for what was about a half a minute. Frightening, but fascinating.

Earthquake country-- Nicaragua.
Sorry, nothing on the English language newswires about it at this time, but in Spanish from Reuters (translation follows):
Strong earthquake on the Pacific Coast shakes Nicaragua
MANAGUA (Reuters) - A strong earthquake with an epicentre on the Nicaraguan Pacific coast shook the country on Saturday and was felt in El Salvador, provoking alarm but without any immediate personal or property damages.
The Nicaraguan Insitute of Earth Studies (Ineter) reported that the earthquake, registering at 6.3 on the Richter scale, was registered at 1526 local time (2126 GMT) in front of the coast of El Astillero, about 150 kilometers southwest of Managua, the nation´s capital.
Rescue groups had no immediate reports of injuries or property damages, although the local authorities reported calls from residents alarmed by the earthquake.
Celular telephone services remain interrupted after the earthquake.
The earthquake was also felt in El Salvador, where in January 2001, a powerful earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale caused hundreds of deaths and material damage.

Cat 5 Hurricane with the eye wall only a few miles south of our hangar.
Gusts estimated over 205 mph...with sustained winds at about 155 mph.
The Island had hurricance conditions for 36 hours.
The national hurricane centre in Miami said that the satellite photos could barely make out the Island during the peak of the storm because it was mostly 'under water'
Storm surge in some areas 15 feet with seas topping 30 feet. Majority of Island is at sea level or just below.
Needless to say the place is just about destroyed. Where I lived will not have power for another 5-6 weeks..thats over 2 months. Water is a trickle at best.
We actually found two seats from one of the Ho's about half a mile down the road..not to mention a couple Twin Otter tires(these were all in our hangar)
When it rains the water pours in the office kitchen.
And we have it lucky!
Some of our staff have completely lost their homes...just a slab remains.
I have been living in the office since.
The amazing thing is, no one outside of here really knows....not sure why I am here...but I guess anything for a job eh?

Alberta can and has had earthquakes. I was living in Pincher Creek in 1982 when a distant rumbling was heard at 05:00 in the morning. My wife bolted up in bed and asked what that was. i said, as a joke, only an earthquake, go back to sleep. So she got up and turned on the radio. it was a mild earthquake with the epicenter somewhere between Cardston and Cut Bank Mont. No damage.
The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

Reminds me of the time I was in bed with one of my wifes and I said what in hell is going on?
She said it must be an earthquake, and I said oh hell I thought you had started moving.
Will I get censored for that one??

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

I have 'ridden' through a surprising number of quakes, considering I'm a Calgary boy. First one was in Equador. The thing that really surprised me was how it doesn't really build to a crescendo and then drop off like thunder does, but seems to hit with it's intensity, and then just as quick as it starts, it's done.
