Any volunteers to fly him to Oshkosh next year?

Edit - my title cut off: should have read "Toronto Star" at the end

I could give him a flying lesson. You know, where I take the canopy off and roll upside down, and we see if a turkey like that can fly?

Anyone here old enough to remember the episode of WKRP where they tossed the turkeys out of the helicopter?

God Damn Condo Owners!

Who the hell do these people think they are? Moving next to an airport or a popular flying area and complaining about the noise?!?

I wonder if he realises, that when those brown and green prop jobbies, buzz him and his fat-ass wife on the beach, that those aircraft helped save the world.

What a great world to save. So some asshole can sit in a condo in Toronto and shake his fist at the sky.

What an idiot. He lives at the eye of 3 major airports. YYZ, YTZ, and YKZ, where there are A/C taking off and landing ALL day... and he's worried about a little RF-22, F16, and a P-51 ,for 30 mintuess, spitting some innocent exhuast fumes on his precious little flowers?

This guy sounds liike a 'pansy' himself.

Mr. Joe Fiorito,

I am writing this email in respect to your article in Thestar.com on Sep 05, 2007 04:30 AM (http://www.thestar.com/News/article/253245).

While I understand aviation, and more specifically Airshows are not for everyone, you seem to take this issue quite personally. I reside in Barrie just an hour north of Toronto so I do not have intimate knowlege of the GTA and where everything is located, but it seems to me that you are a condo owner down by the waterfront given the description in your article.

Being an outsider of Toronto but an insider to Canadian Aviation it seems to me that Toronto is suffering from what I like to call AWTMMS (Assholes With Too Much Money Syndrome).

The Canadian International Airshow has been held at the CNE since 1949. The airport on the Island opened in 1939. Both of these have been held at the waterfront long before the condos have. However, one main symptom of AWTMMS is the total loss of logical thinking. It amazes me that people can be so pig-headed as to think that they have the right to demand something that has allready been established for over 60 years be removed because they don't like the noise, or the smell, etc.

I understand that the waterfront is an ideal place to build big luxurious condos overlooking the lake. But to be fair, the airshow and the airport were there first, if anything your towers present navigation hazards for aircraft.

The last time I flew down to the Island the CN Tower was giving an incredible amount of interferance over my radio. I was listening to dozens of radio and tv brodcasts through my headset at once. But do you know what I wasnt able to hear clearly? The tower from CYTZ.

The Airport has been around for 37 years before the CN Tower was built. I am not suggesting that the CN Tower be removed, but am just trying to show you how one can affect the other.

So I am sorry, my heart does not bleed because a plane may crash into your building or that your flowers have a light sprinkling of exhaust, nor am I going to loose sleep at night because you had to wake up early on the Sunday because of the noise. You decided to buy property beside an area where aircraft have been flying for over 60 years. You should have known better.

You say ban the airshow? I say find a cure for AWTMMS.

Respectfully,

Niss Feiner

What kind of Reporter is this Joe Fiorito
His story is strong on fearmongering but weak on the facts .
None of the aircraft during the show are flying low in the streets setting off car alarms.None of the aircraft are allowed to fly in a manner that would endanger the spectators or those living near the CNE.
His style of reporting is so short on facts and poorly researched .Not even cleverly inventive or entertaining .Just like dropping your pants bending over and letting your arse do the talking.
Human nature being what it is .More people will turn up next year to see something dangerous. So in a way we should thank him for promoting the airshow as the more dangerous something is the more people want to be entertained by it .
Perhaps a community story on why so many people have faulty car alarms in Toronto might sell more newspapers .Or another fearmongering story about how dangerous drinking the lakewater might be.How drinking the lake water might deminish a persons ability to report the facts accurately and truthfully .

Hey Joe what about a story on the new Fiat 500

ciao baby

that is a great letter. what do you bet the odds are that he flys right past his own condo on a commercial plane going to a vacation or something, bet he doesn't bitch and moan then.

after a closer re read of the article i feel compelled to write him myself, it will be very easy to pick apart every one of his arguments. Dang I live in Calgary and would LOVE to have an airshow here, it hurts hearing some wingnut complain about having one he can see from his window!

what a jackass

By the way, it's not about waking up early. It's abour being strafed for three hours, non-stop, in the afternoon.
But hey, you have a nice day up there in Barrie, where all is well in the world.

Joe,

I apologise if it seemed like I was calling you or your neighbours assholes. This was more of a generalization of many of the waterfront dwellers who are trying to choke the airport out.

However I still stand by my point that you and your neighbours moved to an area known to annualy hold airshows, and is adjacent to an airport. I would compare this to some country bumpkins in Tornado ally suprised that they just got hit even though they got hit last year, the year before, etc.

As for all being well in Barrie, I guess you could say that. I havent heard any of the condo owners on the waterfront here trying to ban boats or the marina because they are too loud.

Respectfully,

Niss

Really? Complaining about 3 hours of noise a year. Kids getting shot in the city, nope, gang violence on the rise, nope, drunk drivers, nope, pedafiles, junkies, motorcycle gangs, corruption in public office, the Toronto Maple Leafs, rape, murder, home invasions..nope. None of this causes this jerk to write the paper, 3 hours of noise per year however, that he will not stand for. Here's a thought, shut up and take it like you do for 364 days and 21 hours a year. Or better yet, take a holiday that weekend, maybe somewhere nice and hot like Afghanistan, I am sure there are some troops you can camp next to.

You guys have sure botched this one. Where did you get the impression the writer is a waterfront condo dweller? He lives in Parkdale, south of King St. That area is single family homes, rooming houses, and sleazy low rise apartment buildings. It's an area that's been depressed for decades and is slowly being gentrified, but there are still a lot of dope addicts and hookers around. It is as far from the waterfront condo scene as you can get, and you are revealing your lack of knowledge by making repeated reference to condos. There ain't too many fancy condos in Parkdale, but there are plenty of people sleeping in doorways and on park benches.

Lest you think I'm sticking up for this guy, I'm not, he is completely full of shit. The only planes that overfly Parkdale at low level during the air show are the Snowbirds, and they do come over quite low, but claiming residue from jet exhaust on his flower garden is laughable. I just emailed him to ask how he liked the Molson Indy.

I'm in "conversation" with him, but I'm not sure that I want to post our emails on here as there could be children reading this forum :D . haha...j/k....but seriously, I have very little patience for city-slicker shmucks like him, and my emails say that pretty clearly.

subject Airshow Whining

Dear Sir:

For some reason, after reading your article about the CNE airshow,
I am reminded of Bill Shatner's now immortal words to the "trekkies"
on Saturday Night Live: "Get a life".

I think we both agree that Toronto has many, many problems. I
had the unfortunate experience of living there some years ago,
and I understand it has deteriorated significantly since then. I
am sure there are many constructive issues which you could
choose to address in your writings.

But instead you choose to whine and complain about an airshow,
which I understand occurs once a year, and is greatly enjoyed by
tens of thousands of people?

Please take Bill Shatner's sage-like advice to heart.

Yours truly,

Andrew Boyd

You want to see planes on display? Park the damn things somewhere quiet and let us come and dribble our ice cream cones over the array of death-delivering controls so that we can pretend, in quiet, that we were taking out the Taliban. Stop making us Parkdalians feel as if we were a species of Taliban.

I don't think Patty Wagstaff, John Mohr, or Manfred Radius were thinking about 'taking out the Taliban'. They quietly displayed their prowess.

Grrrrr, I was so angry while writing him, I hope it's coherent.

Sir, I am offended that you speak so derogatorily about the Canadian International Air Show yet you did not attend. Had you been there, perhaps you would have seen what was an awe inspiring display of technological achievement, an amazing demonstration of mastered aerobatic prowess, the aircraft that won past wars allowing you to have the freedom to express yourself as selfishly as you have here, and the continued efforts of our own Canadian Forces Snowbirds proving to be some of the best trained and skilled pilots in the world. You complain that the noise could disturb one from a nap? Surely you jest. 1pm through 4pm are hours which the majority of civilization are, and should be, awake, especially on the Labour day weekend. You complain that the children are being frightened? Sir, I have not met a child who is not thrilled with the sight of a speeding fire engine blasting it's siren, or a massive piece of construction equipment rearing noisy hydraulics, or the sight and sound of an aircraft in flight. You claim a traffic accident occurred as a direct result of the air traffic, is this speculation or fact, traffic accidents unfortunately occur daily in the GTA air show in progress or not.

I must ask, did you arrive at and return from your "white sand" vacation by car? Generally speaking "white sand beaches" are reached by aircraft, which undoubtedly 'disturbed' someone on it's journey. The possibility of your flight not arriving safely and a crash at the CIAS are equal, and against the odds tremendously, yet you took the risk of the wreckage from your business class seat slamming into some unsuspecting persons living room just the same.

I don't even want to get into your comments about your respect for birds and then killing one, except to say that had you attended the air show you may have enjoyed Manfred Radius' spectacular graceful display in his silent sailplane. He did loop, I've never seen a bird 'loop' as you claim.

Sir, I believe that the biggest waste here is the ink and paper used publishing your opinion, and the time I've put into reading it and responding. With all due respect, your opinion sounds like the rantings of a utterly selfish crotchety old man, I am disappointed it was printed. The air show is a longstanding tradition in Toronto, one which I hope to enjoy for many years to come.

Long live the Canadian International Air Show!

Sincerely, annual attendee of the CIAS for more than 25 years.
Jamin Shaw
Cheers,
hytymes
