Ya, it's an Iltis. 4 cyl with an 82 L tank, you can go pretty far. Also, I remember not having to use a proper key to start one, and any pen cap will do. Just need something to push in a small pin and hold it down, located left of the driver's feet. Great little off-roading 4x4.

That's a nice looking Iltis! The first lesson we learned at driver training in the military was "drive it like you stole it, maintain it like you own it!". Of course we tended to excel on the driving part and not so much with the maintenance. Once while driving Hwy. 1 to CFB Shilo.. POOF! That canvas top just took off! I would have laughed a little more at the time were it not January.
Reminds of the time we dunked my friend CJ7 in the Fraser River... not only did we fry ever bit of electrics, except the ignition coil kind off, but the top floated down the river. So we where wet and topless in a 2 degree evening going home...
Hey, is that a German or Canadian Iltis? Are we starting to sell decent ones off as surplus?
I know that we still use them a lot at home, and the 170 or so that we flew to Afghanistan aren't coming back. I understand that the surplus ones before were in horrible shape, many of which had been partially parted out before sale. The German ones for sale were good. If we are selling them, who knows for how much? I think it would make a decent beater to mess around with. I understand that most of the parts are common with VW (rabbit) and audi vehicles.

Ouch! That's a fortune. When so many people in the forces say they're garbage, you would think they would go cheaper.
I just like how it is a simple, no-frills machine that I could put a bunch of crap into and drive far. I don't like how complicated the vehicles of the past 20 years are... all made for looks.
Ah the memories. Great light weight feickle (intentionally misspelled). A little too light in the mud and water, but great on dry ground. I'd love to pick one up myself for light snow plowing/deer hunting. Body looks great (surprisingly) on the above posted Iltis!
I too thought you'd be able to nab one for under a $1000 considering what mose of them have been through and their age. Would be a fun field vehicle for sure.
