Yes, but unfortunately the scarcity of healthy foods in a small northern town combined with the exorbitant cost combined with my chronic alcoholism prevents me from eating healthy and exercising as much as I should.

I hit the gym 5 days a week but haven't shed a pound. I think I need more cardio. I've mainly been doing weights.

Gym near work 4 times a week, a few weights but mostly cardio (I hate cardio but it becomes a habit/pattern). That combined with REAL changes in how I eat makes for 35 pounds in the last 6 months.

I have a trainer and she says alot of my problem is not eating enough. Because of the amount I'm going to the gym she figures I should be taking in about 3600 calories a day as opposed to about the 1100 I currently take in. I just have a hard time eating that much food in a day.

cardio

Post by GoWrench »

if you are hitting the gym 5 days a week and not doing any cardio, then you are not doing yourself a lot of good. You should split your workouts. Do a quick, say 5 min, cardio warm up. A quick-paced walk on a treadmill or elliptical. Then do your weights. One day, to upper body, then next do lower, both mixed in with some abs work. 30 minutes of weight work is enough per session. Next do 30 minutes of fast cardio. Running on the treadmill is usually the best bang for your buck so to speak. Ellipticals add no resistance, is just gliding in my opinion. Always set your incline to at least 1%, it simulates a more realistic running montion than a completely flat surface. Cardio is what burns fat, not weights. Weight work will help tone your mussle.
You also have to eat enough. If you don't then your body will go into starvation mode and will hang on to any fat you have.
Breakfast is the most important meal, never skip it!

I've been doing 10min of cardio a day. I think I need to step it up more though.

If you really want to loose the pounds, the weight room is the place to be. Weight lifting really cranks up the bodies furnace and it start to burn all the calories. It has to be combined with proper eating and cardio. Go nuts but watch your back. Always lift smart.

And your shoulders! I blew out a shoulder doing a real heavy bench press about 8 years ago and haven't been the same since.

sad to say but the real culprit for most of us is the empty calories in...gulp...alcoholic drinks! (and simple carbs too)

Stick with vodka rocks if you have a few and kick the beer habit. No soft drinks and no chips. Start with the diet and anything you do to exercise will have a more longlasting and immediate effect. Seriously, write down what you eat (and drink) in a week and you'd be surprised.

the best shape i ever got in was when i cut out anything white..(bread rice potatoes crackers etc) and forced as much veggies in my gullut before going for anything else. then you really only feel like having a small normal sized portion of protein (steak chicken etc) instead of the usual 20 ouncer.

look into the Glycemic index and it will explain a lot about what we are really doing to ourselves.

disclaimer! I preach but rarely follow! Im just noticing now that the periods that I dont follow the advice out there is getting harder to recover from!

heres to seeing ya in the gym.
