Instructor Job in University

Post by Murph »

I'm going to be going to university soon, I'm also building time towards my CPL right now. Im wondering if it would be a good idea to get my Class 4 instructor while in university and what the chances of getting a Part time job instructing(if there is such a thing?) with the company i train with to build time and earn atleast some money. Is this probable? A good idea? what other options should i look at? Also how much time on floats is required to instruct on floats? can a class 4 even do that? (scanned the CAR's didn't see anything on float instruction privilages)

CAR 425.21 spells out the experience requiremetns to provide training.

If you are talking about teaching towards a recreational pilot permit or private licence (to someone who does not hold a rec. permit with a float rating) on floats, 425.21 (2) applies:
You must have:
(a) a flight instructor rating for aeroplanes; and
(b) 50 hours flight time on floats.

If you are talking about teaching towards a float rating then 425.21 (6) applies:
You must have:
(a) A commercial or ATPL (no requirment for and instructor rating); and
(b) 50 hours flight time on floats.

If the person already has a float raing and at least a Recreational Permit then you don't need the 50 hours.

Lots of people instruct while they're attending university. I instructed with a guy that was hired onto a Metro out of Pearson while he was still in school. Anything can happen.

hey man, go for it!
Im just finishing up my last semester of university with a business degree. Its tough slugging sometimes but it can be done (and you can even have a life!). As far as part time instructing, yeah it can be done. Just make sure that those are your intentions before doing your instructor rating and check to see if theyd be willing to work with you on that. Where im at, im at school Tuesdays and Thursdays and flying the rest with homework/studying in between flights and in the evenings. I found that where i am working now, the boss was very happy to help out considering i was doing a degree. So there you go, it can be done. :D

Good luck!
