My class 1 instructor rating expires April 1st this year. Wondering if TC still does "Instructor Refresher Courses"? I've been out of the instructor scene for a few years - apologies if this has already been asked in the past little while.

Transport Canada Civil Aviation no longer conducts flight instructor refresher courses. Policy and procedures have been established to allow industry to obtain authority to conduct these courses.

I believe Seneca College is running courses if you are in and around the GTA area.

Since my intructor rating has been lapsed since cough cough '86 cough, I thought I might try the Refresher Course at Seneca.

I took the full service course in 82. Meals, accomodation, drinks, airfare... the usual.

I am presuming that there may have been a couple of changes to the course since that time. Is there anyone from this century who has taken/ taught it? Being old, with a faulty memory, I know that I am bound to learn something. What I was hoping to learn was, what did you glean from this course? What in retrospect would you have reviewed first, and followed up on later.

What, aside from my leather flying jacket and pilot sunglasses should I bring along?

Actually, the Captain posed that question last year. I'm going, though.

Next year, me and Randy'r gonna get our grade 11.

Just curious if it's been since the 80s that you held an instructor rating I'm affraid you'r going to have to do more than take a refresher course. I believe after lapsing for more than 5 years you have to rewrite the exams and do a full flight test.

Please correct me if Im wrong. If it's just a matter of taking a refesher course I'll sign up tomorrow.

(c) Where a flight instructor rating has been invalid for more than 24 months, an applicant for renewal shall:

(i) provide a recommendation from the holder of a Class 1 Flight Instructor Rating in the appropriate category indicating that the applicant is considered competent to complete the written examination(s) and undertake an instructor flight test;

(ii) successfully complete the examination requirement set forth under Knowledge for the appropriate flight instructor rating; and

(iii) successfully complete a flight test for the appropriate flight instructor rating.

So, if your instructor rating has been expired for more than two years,
you have to write the corresponding written test, and do the corresponding
flight test, for the class of instructor rating that you held.

The written test isn't a biggie. Most people find the instructor
rating flight test more of a challenge than the written.

Thanks, I was aware that I'll be spending a bit of time besides the refresher to have everything back. But since my training experience of late has been IFR, and Type training and assessment; it seemed to make sense to have the refresher for the administrative and paperwork changes at the private/ commercial training level.

It'll likely save Hedley a dozen "you bungling fool!" comments when it comes to the flight training portion.

Last summer I just went through renewing my instructor rating that expired almost 5 years ago. I held a class 2 when I quit instructing. I went back to my local TC office and rewrote the exam, which is easy, just study up on licencing requirements and learning factors. I booked my flight test for the next week with a TC inspector. The flight test was a relaxed the examiner said right off I know you can fly, show me how would you teach. It ended up being alot of fun in the end. Over all to renew the instructor rating was very easy and I'd suggest doing it. There are very few experienced instructors out there that could use some real world mentoring!

I took the Seneca Instructor Refresher course in Fall 2007 when it was initially offered.

To be honest, it was actually very, very good. I would recommend it to anyone with the inclination to try it.

The class was about twenty ranging from Class Is to IVs. Lots of interaction with Transport Inspectors, lots of sharing of ideas.

If you are looking for the "quickie" renewal, you'll have to grit your teeth and survive three full days locked in a classroom and you'll getter done.

If enhancing your teaching skills appeals to you, it is good for that too.

Very good value for time and money spent.

That's excellent! The pre-course homework forces you to
dig around in the CARs, flight test guides, etc.

I've taken two instructor refresher courses in two decades,
and while they were both very different, they were both
quite worthwhile, for any instructor of any experience.

First instructor refresher course I took (back in 1992?)
was at TCTI in cornwall - accomodations and food included,
and so was some flight time with an Inspector!

Give me a holler when you want to start studying for
the written (class 2) exam - I'll email you a bunch of stuff.

Yes, I recall the peacocks in the courtyard, elaborate meals and flying home on Eastern Provincial Airlines. I'll give you a shout when I get home. I'll probably be very humble by then.

I just finished the pre-course work, which permitted me to increase my googling skills of the CARs tenfold. The material is interesting, and there is a bit of the coursework I hadn't bargained on and can put to use right away.

Well, I'm off to school. I won't use that "I had to walk ten miles to school through the snow ten miles uphill...." stuff when I get there, but I will have to go 2000 nm with someone else driving.

Ouch, they made me learn stuff! That the the loss of an afternoon nap, nearly killed me. But off to day two.

I did! And I'm much more humble now!

Okay, passed the course. I am marginally smarter now having absorbed about 10% of what was offered. Fortunately, I was able to use "Back in the old days..." a lot. This brought my brain up to the full 101.5%. Beer, nap, jet, home.
