Good headset for training
I'm going to be starting flight training very soon and would like to have my own headset. I need something VERY affordable that works. I plan to buy a better headset once I'm actually flying for comp and I can keep the cheap one for guests etc. Any suggestions would be great espaecially from experience. i'm looking in the under $200 Cdn range.
Thanks!
Thanks!
To start, get yourself a set of AVCOMM 200. They are about $150 + tax. They are good enough for the PPL. When you get more serious about flying, then you can go spend more cash on better ones. If you rent them from the school, they usually charge you 6-7 dollars per hour. At the end of the minimum 45th hour for your PPL (which you'll need more) you are looking to spend over $270!. As you can see, you can't go wrong buying. When you eventually buy a better set, your passengers can use your old ones as you mentioned.

I bought a Peltor 7004 a few years ago when I was doing my Commercial, and I absolutley love it. It is very high quality, and it cost just over 200 CAD. I have a David Clark H10-13s headset too, but though it cost twice as much I never use it.
Peltor are a little bit different from the DC-style headsets in that they squeeze your head, which some find uncomfortable, and the band is not adjustable. However, those that like them love them in my experience. If you have an "average" sized head it is both more comfortable and quieter in my experience.

i've had the same cheapest DC for 7 yrs that's doesn't owe me a thing and still works like a charm. did over 8 hrs in the bird the other day and still forget it's on. on two seperate occasions i've had students rip their avcomm/peltor off their heads and throw toss them to the back of the plane after being fed up with getting headaches and having to fiddle around with the mic/jacks all flight. it's like anything else- you get what you pay for i'd say either get a decent one or just wait. you can always use the flight school's headsets. if you do spring for a cheapo don't expect any semblance of comfort on a flight longer than an hour and a half.

Hey Dub,
If you get the Avcomm 200, get a little screwdriver; the mic boom is hinged, and the screws have been known to get loose. I know; we sell them at my club. VIP Pilot is selling the Avcomm 900 for around 170; better headset for the buck, especially if you want to use them as a second set after you upgrade. Gel seals and foam seals, gel covers, flexible mic boom, push to talk built in (just in case). Go to vippilot.com for other ideas.
Oh, and no, I don't work for vip!

SCM,
DC suggested price for new H1030 is $390. They're heavy, but bulletproof. If it's in good shape, I'd say get on it.

Dub,
I use the DC 10-13s and think they're great. Good entry level DCs. The main thing you're getting with DCs is the warranty. Usually a 5 year warranty, but I know a guy who sent them for repair after 7 yrs and they asked no questions. They stand behind their products 100%, which is one of the reasons you pay a little extra for them. If you have a chance to buy DCs, you should, but make sure they're not too old. Also, if you can, make sure you test them first.
