King Air 200 F/O

Post by history »

Does a pilot need to write the ATPL/IATRA to fly a King Air 200 or can they just have a Commercial License? Because the King Air 200 would be consider a high performance aeroplane.

Anyone know??

I started flying the 200 with 300 hours and no IATRA. So no, you don't need it. It is high performance but it is a single pilot aircraft.

You are getting confused between ATPL requirments and type rating. Also, it depends on the model of Be20 wether or not a type rating is required. BB has the higher(242?)VNE if memory serves.

Some Beech 200's require the type rating some don't. My last company we had one of each. The way things are today splurge on the IATRA ($35) and you'll be good to go anywhere.

No matter what you don't need an IATRA or ATPL for the 200.

Those are required for 2 crew required aircraft: eg. 1900, Saabs, Metro III's.

The 200 is a "high performance airplane" depending on serial number and config due to its Vmo being over 250kts which therefore requires specified training approved by transport and a flight test.

It's all in CARS 421. I'm too lazy to look up the subsection right now.

The ATPL is to operate an aircraft requiring more than 1 crew; however, what we are talking about here is the ability to hold a type rating. That, you need the IATRA or the ATPL exams completed. Once a type rating has been endorsed you no longer need to keep the IATRA valid. The BE20, in certain serial numbers requires a type rating because its "high performance". To fly a "High Performance" airplane it needs to be specifically endorsed on your liscence. The type rating is separate from the PPC, which allows you to operate the machine in commercial operations.

If you had a private BE20 you might need a type rating (depending on serial number).

The Beech 200/B200 is a high performance airplane and so a type rating is required to be either a Captain or an F/O. Some Catpass 200's or Beech 1300's just fall shy of the type rating requirements, usually because of modifications or installled equipment like baggage pods which reduce the Vmo or Vso. If the autopilot is removed, it becomes a two crew airplane but the type certificate for the airplane still says it is still a single pilot airplane. It is just that a commercial air operator cannot fly it single pilot without the autopilot. The same thing happens with the Beech 100/A100.
Some airplanes, such as the Metro 111/23, are single pilot airplanes by certification standards but because the MTOW is greater than 12,500 lbs, a type rating is required and an ATPL for the Captain or IATRA/ATPL written or possesed for the F/O but if the airplane is equipped with an autopilot, the air operator can request (and usually recieve) single pilot authority and then the Captain only requires a Commercial Pilot Licence.
If you have enough time to write the ATPL exams but not enough flight experience to hold the licence, a type rating on the B200 will not hold the exam marks "for further use" (2 year time limit) but if you get a type rating on an above 12,500 MTOW airplane such as a B350 or Metro 111/23, that will "freeze" your ATPL exam results.
Confused?
I am.

I was told by a Transport Office (a few years ago) that if you have your IATRA or AAs written you can be endorsed with a type rating. The exams do expire after 2 years BUT if you get endorsed on at least 1 type you are able to continue adding endorsements even after the 2 years expire, and of course you won't loose the type rating you have.

That info is starting to get old now though.

So just to confirm, the IATRA expires after two years? If so then mine will be expiring in a few months. Is there any way to keep it current other than rewriting the test if I don't have a type rating?

It expires the 1st day of the 25th month, same as the ATPL exams. If you have not recieved a type rating than you will need to re-write.

Woo somone kinda referred to a post of mine! I feel special!

Question, as this thread is headed that way, and before I talk to TC, I'll grab some input here.

So far, here I am a Be20/30 f/o, ppc'd and all that - now as I'm approaching the 750 hour mark, if I were to write the ATPL exams, and maintain these PPC's, will the ATPL exams 'expire' on that 25th month? (Do I need to get a PPC on say a beech 1900 (two crew, as per that cited chart?)

Cheers!

I had my ATPL's written when I first got the type rating in 2002 so I'm not positive about this one, but isn't this one of those SFAR 41 things? ie if you were going to operating in a scheduled air service with 10 or more seats you'd need the ATPL or IATRA written done but for medevacs or charter yer good to go? Okay I have no idea.

further thought - if you are to write your IATRA, then get a PPc on a Kingair 200 - will that 'lock you in' as for the IATRA requirements? Just wondering on that one as well.

It was my understanding that you have until the first day of the 25th month to meet all of the requirements, as well as have your ATPL signed off by transport. In any other circumstance you must rewrite the exams. For the iatra, obtain a ppc on an aircraft requiring an iatra, or rewrite.

:!: CAR 421.40 (3a) Individual Type Rating Requirements (Aeroplane - Two Crew)
http://www.tc.gc.ca/CivilAviation/Regse ... htm#421_40

There are two scenarios, one for PPLs & CPLs, the other for ATPLs

To answer your question though, for a PPL/CPL, as long as you meet the following, you're good to go.

- Have completed Ground School and Flight Instruction on your specific a/c type
- Have written and passed the IATRA, in the last 24 months
- Have 250 TT in aeroplane
- Have passed a PPC check (or any of the other 2 options listed in the CARs), in the last 12 months
- Apply to TC for the type rating

Most written exams are "good" for 2 years (24 months). Which means that if you don't meet ALL
the requirements (knowledge, experience, and skills) set out in the CARs by the prescribed timeline,
then you're SOL and will have redo whatever portion that may be "timed out".

Hope that helps!

Re-Read the thread

Don't confuse the Type Rating Requirments with the ATPL ones

For the ATPL
http://www.tc.gc.ca/CivilAviation/Regse ... htm#421_34

For the Type Rating, should you have your AAs
http://www.tc.gc.ca/CivilAviation/Regse ... htm#421_40

Long story short, you do not need a Type Rating in order to get your ATPL.
If you do end up writing the SAMRA/SARON at 750 hours, just make sure that you can meet ALL
the requirments as set out in CAR 421.34 before 24 months. If not then your exams would "expire"
and you would have to re-write them.

Plus let's look at it this way. If you have 750 TT, that means that your 750 short of your ATPL right?
Since your flying as an FO, the time towards the application of the license only counts for half;
which means that in actuality, you would need 1500 "normal flying hours" as an FO to be able
to count 750 towards your ATPL.

See where I'm getting at?

Thanks Grey_Wolf - that made sense - all food for thought nonetheless. Will wait another 900 hours or so before I write the ATP exams, just to be sure.

Cheers

Some mis-info here.

A B200 requires a type rating, the reasons for the requirement are irrelevant. The initial issuance of the type rating requires that the candidate either holds an ATPL or has written the ATPL exams or has written the IATRA's. Once the type rating has been issued the written exams can expire without without worrying about the type rating or the PPC. They will both stay in effect. The 8th edition of the ACP manual outlines this.

Just to be clear here you DO need a type rating to fly certain Beech 200s. The type rating does NOT have to do with the minimum crew requirement, but the aircraft's performance. A type rating does NOT lock in your ATPL exams; BUT it DOES lock in your ability to be type rated on other equipment- which essentially drops the requirement to maintain an IATRA. The ATPLs still have the 2 year requirement to collect the required experience and sumbit for application.

That's how I understand it.
