Announcement this morning.
--M

"Bombardier announced today that its Board of Directors has granted Bombardier Aerospace the authority to offer formal sales proposals of the optimized CSeries aircraft family to airline customers. The aircraft will incorporate the latest technology available to produce the economic, performance, environmental and passenger-oriented improvements demanded by airline customers for the next quarter century. Entry into service is scheduled for 2013.

Authority to offer is the next important step in the process that leads to program launch. Before requesting program launch approval from the Bombardier Board of Directors, Bombardier Aerospace will obtain firm commitments from customers. A launch decision is expected in 2008."

About time! Hopefully they get some orders for it soon. Embraer already took a big chunk of the E-jet market....

Of course with this plane to serve the 100-149 seat market, they are starting to compete with Airbus and Boeing narrow bodies. Both of whom have decided to delay the launch of replacements for the 320/737 which could be a big window of opportunity for Bombardier. Let's hope they can deliver and put Canadian Aerospace back on top.

Bombardier may move work to U.S.
Written by Aviation.ca

The third-largest airplane manufacturer in the world is threatening to reallocate production to the United States as a result of the Canadian loonie. More government funds are needed if Bombardier is to remain in the Montreal area. One unnamed United State has already been in discussions with Bombardier Inc.. which would ultimately allow for the list prices to be in U.S. dollars. Governments in Canada, Quebec, and Northern Ireland have been involved in talks to increase their contributions for the new US$3.2 billion CSeries .

"These are still are our preferred sites but the negotiations are going on and given the state of the Canadian dollar and the British pound, we are evaluating sites in the United States at this point," Pierre Beaudoin, president of Bombardier Aerospace, said Friday during a conference call.

Many of the components of the current line of aircraft are manufactured outside of Canada. Boeing and Airbus are much the same. As a matter of fact Bombardier in Montreal manufactures parts for other aircraft manufacturers inlcuding Boeing.

I guess the simple answer is when they decide to stop making airplanes. To successfully develop and market large aircraft in the global market place, government backing is absolutely required. Furthermore, "handouts" is not the proper term. Except for a couple of programs, Bombardier has paid back any financial support and has provided Canada with thousands upon thousands of quality jobs.

Why isn't anyone asking when Embraer, Boeing or Airbus will stop being subsidized by their respective governments?

Good post, CID, (shudder) the reality is that without Bombardier in Quebec the economy will pretty much implode. The province is surprisingly socialist, kind of 'stealth socialism;' many free or subsidized programs with only about 25% of the populace paying the taxes (highest tax rate in North America). Without the merry-go-round of subsidies for Bombardier, it will bail (New York offered them an airport, complete, for a $1) and Quebec will have huge problems as the 25% of taxpayers are well entrenched in Aerospace. Just about every other manufacturing job, well-paying, stable jobs (generally) have gone off-shore. We can't all be stockbrokers and lawyers.......

It galls the west to hear of these subsidies, but with Bombardier gone, there will be more transfer payments from the 'have' provinces to Quebec and your taxes will go up.

One shining light in Quebec is the fact that the PQ have so degraded, they are not even in opposition now. Yay!

xsbank, your post seems to imply that big business in the west doesn't enjoy government subsidies. Without generous government subsidies, the Alberta oil patch would never have been developed. Continuing oil exploration and research is subsidied. I would hardly call Alberta "socialist".

International trade in large scale technology is dependant on government subsidies. It doesn't matter if you're talking Alberta or Quebec.

Can they compete against Airbus? Would airlines consider BBD over Airbus or Boeing?

So far, only Northwest is? But time will tell.....

Bombardier to launch CSeries

"China Southern Airlines will be a launch customer for Bombardier Inc.'s 100-130 passenger CSeries airliner with an initial order for 50 aircraft and is also expected to order 50 Q400 turboprops, Research Capital Corp. analyst Jacques Kavafian said today after returning from a one-week visit to China."

Shares are hitting 52 weeks highs. I think this company's got a solid outlook.

Share prices mean almost nothing. Go check what Nortel and Enron were trading at right before they blew up.

They had accounting scandals. That's not the same at all.
