BE20 EFIS

Post by catIII »

The company I work for just picked up a King Air with the Collins EFIS-85 Three-Tube System. Does anyone know what the training requirements are? None of our 200's have EFIS, I'm assuming you require a checkout or training of some sort.

If anyone have any information on this please PM me.

Thanks,

catIII

I don't think there is any requirement for going from steam to EFIS, maybe just a differences exam or a course on the systems. Other than that, Welcome to modern age.

There is transition training available and I would highly recommend it for pilots who have never been exposed to EFIS. Yes, you can muddle through it but there is a learning curve that could be minimized with the training.

Having said that, EFIS 85 isn't that big of a transition. Your airdata is still on conventional instruments.

Once you use it a little you will find it very easy to get used to. It is the only EFIS I have experience with. I came off a navajo with steam, obviously, and onto a 1900D with it Installed (I think it is the same system, its likely very similar). If your company has no course, I'd advise sitting in the hangar with the ground power plugged in and just playing with it while you go through the manuals. A couple of training flights at least would be a must. Have fun with it :)

Cheers,

Like any new aircraft type or aircraft equipment you need training in how to use it.

Having said that glass is more intuitive than steam and easy to use.

My first exposure to the glass cockpit was in Toulouse in the A320 Simulator and I found it really easy to get used to.

The most difficult thing about flying is knowing when to say no.

After over a half a century of flying I can not remember even one trip that I refused to do that resulted in someone getting killed because of my decision not to fly.
