Well gang today I found a new use for my Leatherman, walking through the desert this morning I accidently brushed up against a Cholla Cactus.....it was quite an experience as a section about the size of a lemon with one inch spikes was buried in my shirt sleeve and my arm.
The pain is second only to getting your nuts tightened in a bench vise.
Anyhow I managed to get my leatherman out of my pocket and proceeded to try and remove the cactus spines from my arm, somehow I got a little to much in a hurry and the damn thing came out of my arm and stuck in my other hand....if you have never felt the pain of these things my advice is don't ever get one stuck in your body anywhere.
That was about eight hours ago and my arm and hand are still hurting like a dozen bee stings, and I have over twenty puncture marks.
This is one time I wish I had not quit drinking so I could pound back about a gallon of whiskey to ease the pain.

The most difficult thing about flying is knowing when to say no.
After over a half a century of flying I can not remember even one trip that I refused to do that resulted in someone getting killed because of my decision not to fly.

No not that one Blakey that is a Jumping Cholla and no where as bad as the one I tangled with..
Look up the Teddy bear Cholla and read what that sucker is like.....I couldn't believe how fast the section seperated from the plant and how deep the spikes were buried in my arm.
I don't know how long it took me to remove all the spikes but it was like having twenty bees stinging all at the same time.

Yeh, highflyingpilot we do have our differences....but it is me who gets their nuts in the vise.....just ask Dave Nowzek and Merlin Preuss because they have been in the vice with me turning the handle.Well you know how TC and . get along

Good thing I lived the life I have because it has made me almost oblivious to pain...how else could I have survived 55 years in aviation.....reminds me of the time I was bitten by a black Mamba in Africa..we rushed the snake to a veternarian but the poor thing died before we got it there.

Apparently you're supposed to use olive oil on your skin (if you have some nearby) for the tiny pieces of the cacus barbs as it softens the skin and allows them to fall out.

And speaking from experience I can state that you need more than a Leatherman to remove a TC prick.

Playing golf in Arizona I as well had an encounter with the Jumping Cholla! They told me not to go off the fairways to get lost balls, I didn't listen!
I swear that cactus attacked me, I had barbs all down my leg and arm. I was so mad that I smashed the sh*t out of that cactus with my golf club!
