Any Scabs in your Shop??

Post by black hole »

Any scabs in your shop. You Know: the old Geezer that used to fix jigger on the R&R 50 years ago and now the boss says he can fix planes. Or the buddy of the boss that comes in after hours and does a complete top overhaul on the 185,and the parts came from a Canadian Tire garage sale. Nothing in the log books, but she's ready to go in the morning!!!! Are you the pilot or the young AME and this is the plane thats comming in to the shop in 10.5 hours for a 100hr and now its your baby???? I Know you close the tool box and "take this job and shove it". But Wait! there's that little (and I mean little) house (in B**t f**k Manitoba-that you couldn't give away on short notice) that you just moved into with your Wife and the little one due in three months!!??!? OK we'll go and be quite frank with the boss an tell him that your not comfortable with. . . . Oh well!!!! he reminds you about that starter stud that you twisted off a month ago that cost @%&*##( that scab probably overtorqued last winter). But he has given you a breaks and not taken it off your pay; but now we're even???!?
I know theese guys are still out there. Maybe you have some good stories. No names please. We allready know them.

as much as it sucks, I think that there is one in every shop, and in every company. I have worked for a few different operators and it seems that there is always someone who becomes the companys favorite and the worlds most valuble mechanic by simply being the bosses best friend, or kisses up enough to the right people. It stinks, but I guess that all anyone can hope for is that those individuals know who they really are, and are possible reading this topic right now. I guess it comes down to personal pride, in knowing that you are doing the absolute best work possible.

You're not alone, I have always found it funny that a streak of silver in your hair means you are experienced in the industry to pilots & managers when quite the opposite is actually true 9 times out of 10. I have seen some nasty work and decisions by the silver-hairs, and everyone stands by it because he is older, which means more experience, which means he knows what he is doing (based on age and hair color and little else). Nobody pays attention to me fixing his @#$!-ups the next week, and the SMS sytem is a joke for reporting such instances since it gets put through the system and vanishes because the older wiser guy must obviously know what he is doing, who would dare challenge such a knowledgeable employee that is a huge asset to the company  . Welcome to the way operators are allowed to conduct operations under the regulator's new rules. Pay very close attention to what your signature is tied to, and set a standard for yourself that you will not deviate from when the ink hits the paper.

Hey try working in a shop where Joe bloe that hasn't even made it thru grade 9 in high school is now a mechanic. Cause apparently transport is full of shit when they require proof of training from an accredited course, or school. Or better yet some ex-millitary guy that wasn't a mechanic when he was in, but worked around aircraft, figuring he's gonna get his AME's licence in 6 months to a year... That's odd... it took me 2 years of college and then 2 more years working before I got mine! The guy hasn't even done ICS. But I guess he's far more qualified than I am... doesn't even know how to clean a spark plug the arrogant ass!!! And I'm expected to meekly sign their work out!? Not fucking likely!!!

Meecka i feel your pain. I have had to on many occasions work with a retired limey ex military engine guy who is a self proclaimed tin basher. Fvcking guys doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground, yet demands the same wage as myself and other contractors! Guy isnt even licensed!! Bad enough i have to show him how to do everything but even worse when i have to sign his work out. Its no secret we are in a skilled trades shortage but to have these people ride on the coat tails of us who do know what we are doing is infuriating. Good tin bashers and mechanics are like parking spots. The good ones are taken and all that are left are handicapped.

Interesting that you use "scab" to define a less than competent or socially acceptable worker.
In the real world 'SCAB" is a person who crosses a picket line or accepts employment at a business that is involved in a labor dispute with it's unionised workforce.

The most difficult thing about flying is knowing when to say no.

After over a half a century of flying I can not remember even one trip that I refused to do that resulted in someone getting killed because of my decision not to fly.

I know in other industries, forged "tickets" can be purchased, I guess it's the same in aviation?

I would personally have to say that the greatest down fall of our industry is people who do not have pride in their work, those people who would rather just get the job done then to take the time to do it right, is scares and saddens me to see these people, full well knowing that by just caring more about the plane then their cell phones( or what ever else) , work might actually get done right for once. As far as scabs go, there every where and not much you can do about it.

AH yes doing things right or fast... nothing quite like hearing your boss tell you that it should only take 8 hours to do a annual inspection on a airplane you have never seen before.. or my personal favorite... "..eh this guy only flies 100 hours a year so do a quick annual"
Heres an idea... below me.

Don't you just love the moron bosses who give the time lines that are unrealistic. Had 8 hrs once to do a 100hr on a snessna 401. I did all i could in the 8 hr time alloted and let him sign the logbook. ( I was an apprentice at the time). Well dam if the aircraft didnt get ramped about 2 days later and the boss ultimately was given a 7 day suspension. Apparently a few things got missed during the inspection.
