How do folks live anywhere on an AME's salary? Unless you're in PEI, you better marry money if you want a nice house!
Will fix airplanes for food.

It's my preliminary shot at how much it costs to live in Calgary and it's in response to someone who wrote in about how it's impossible to live for between $2000 to $3000 in Alberta as a pilot.
I make the argument that you can live making $2486 month theoretically.
$30/hr times 4 weeks at 40 hrs per week is $4800...that is a $1500 to do what ever you want with it. This ASSUMES you NET $30/hr.
I just have to mention that I neglected to include:
a) insurance of any sort, don't do laundry and have very no entertainment other than computer
b) food budget only included 1 four piece combo meal KFC meal per day (adds up to $300 per month) double it if you need 2 KFC meals / day.
c) I bought a 1,200 sq ft house $128,000 with $80,000 down payment back in 2001 and pay approx $600 / month now mortgage... if you don't have cash for a down-payment -- you end up renting an apartment at $1,200 per month.

Your $128K house in 2001 is now a $400K house in 2008. It's hard to break into the housing market anywhere west of Medicine Hat these days unless you're arriving with a large bankroll.MyMeowCat wrote:Please read:

Hey MarkyMark. Do you drive a ferrari or something that you can't afford. Just curious because I use to make less than 30 an hour living in Calgary in a nice place and i have 2 vehicles that are insured, still travel and do the things I want. I am even rebuilding a plane so unless you blow your money at the casino or Chicks I don't see how you can't live on that kind of wage. Everyone on here keeps talking about living Calgary and how bad it is. Well I live here and its not that bad if you're not an idiot with money.
Calgary work as an AME
I am desperate to leave the North after 14 years and set my eyes on Calgary because my lady and her son came from there. We are all moving south now but I totally have to admit that the thought of falling of the wagon financially scares the heck out of me. My Yellowknife job pays me 22.81 per hour plus a northern living allowance of 500.00 per month (taxed), so my income is around 25.00 per hour. Of what I know about the North I must say that I survived the last 14 years here mainly by not having a live as you guys would know it. The North is all about work, not living. I moved here because of stability and guarantee of work / employment. Now it is time to rethink about what live is all about and I am ready to disregard the need to get rich completely. However, as an AME we don't want to think that our work and income is only worth enough to survive. So, could I actually expect to live better in Calgary than in the Barrens?
This is somewhat important as we already decided to leave Yellowknife.

Re: Kenn Borek Air, Ltd
There is lots of work in Calgary for experienced Engineers.
You should be able to garnish 28 to 32 per hr if you have the revelent experience on type.
House prices are high as you well know but the rest of everyday living is not a lot different from the rest of the country except in the small communities where there may not be a lot of jobs and opportunities.

Re: Calgary work as an AME
John, you were working up there with an AME licence making $22.81/hr?? Are you on crack??? Wages in this industry may be poor but that is about what our senior apprentices make in YVR!!! You should be making way more than that my friend.. And you will in YYC.. So do not hesitate to move.. I'm sure you will find something that makes you happy there.arc300dvs wrote:I am desperate to leave the North after 14 years and set my eyes on Calgary because my lady and her son came from there. maybe that's the trick, twott'sJohn, you were working up there with an AME licence making $22.81/hr?? Are you on crack???
That's a crazy low wage for any trade, after being at for 14 years, licensed or not.
Have to say about Calgary... having worked in both areas recently, I'd say it would be about the same as what yellowknife, on your wage, is now. Biggest plus being you're not in yellowknife
Good luck
Re: Kenn Borek Air, Ltd
In Calgary -- Tim Hortons can pay $15/hr for a kid living with mom and dad.
By comparison -- engineers should make way more than that.

NO ONE is slamming Calgary its the wages are low compared to the cost of living! I am very glad you are doing so well and by the way I drive a Harley no way I am going to take the Ferrari out until it warms up LOLavyonx wrote:Hey MarkyMark.
