Any idea where one can find the payscale for Capt's and F/O's?
How long till upgrade these days?

1st year pay for f/o is $40,000 plus profit share. Captains start at $72,000 plus profit share. No payscale yet, but profit share can be up to 17% of your annual salary. Upgrades are fast with the current wait being somewhere less than 1 year due to all the aircraft deliveries in the next couple of years. And due to the expansion, there will probably be a few direct entry captain spots available this summer.

I've been flying for Porter for almost 2 years, so I'll say to those that get in - you'll truly enjoy the aircraft, crews you work with, and the relationship you will have with management. Good luck to all who apply!

seems like a great opportunity but why the low starting salary for FO's? Not sure how you are going to live off that in Toronto.

I have lived in Toronto...and 40k was no where near enough with a family....dont really think anyone could argue that....not unless mom and dad grandma and grandpa live down the road....but anyway each to his own.

I don't know - but wouldn't you logically speaking at 3000 hours, ATPL, Degree, look at WJA/ACA ? Just seems like much better life style than flying dash 8's when looking at it long term; also, how confident can you be that it won't go down like the other company's? But maybe starting small with DH8's is a sign of them showing that they know how to run a business? Start Small, Grow Big. But I guess if you like 704 work then that's cool But I just don't know if at 3000hrs F/O and 5000hrs captain wanting to fly Dash 8's. But I dunno, maybe an operator like Porter would be something that would interest somebody at that experience level.

And about the 3,000$ bond for the uniform, I can confirm that. Armani? I don't think so, not according to their site.

However, the ignorant who don't know any better would just throw in the name Armani since that's the only designer name they'd probably know.

e-flyer....you have a good point but ac is no longer hiring like they were and wj is based in yyc and has a weird company culture so some may see this as a good opportunity if you are from the Toronto area. Its expensive on what WJ is paying to move your family out to yyc and besides porter seems like it is doing well and has its own profit sharing in place from what I have seen on this site....and that q-400 is just as advanced in the cockpit as any 737 just missing the jet engines:(...but then again on 40k to start....ouch...thats a kick in the teeth.

The reason for the high experience requirement is that Porter is operating a 64,000lb airplane with jet-like speed out of a 4000' strip surrounded by water. This requires a certain amount of "hands and feet" that only comes from experience. It is very challenging to do well consistently, but also extremely rewarding once you "get it".

When I got my float rating some years ago, I asked the wise float-plane instructor what would be the fastest way to get to fly a jet. He told me to chase companies, not airplanes. With oil now at a record high of $118/barrel, Q400s are selling like hot-cakes because they burn half the fuel of a similar sized jet. Plus operating out of YTZ is much cheaper than YYZ. So you should ask yourself - which company is set up to prosper in the long run, because the companies fortunes are directly related to the employees fortune.

Ohh, and my lifestyle is just fine. I'm not jet-lagged or recovering from night flights, so I get to spend a ton of time with my wife and kid, which is all that really matters to me.

The suits look nice but are not Armani (they are Pink Tartan), and for the record - you get 5 shirts a year.

I don't know, maybe a guy like me ! A late bloomer, back into aviation after a long absence & not interested in sitting right seat 5 - 8 years like at Jazz. But still has bags of time. And, from what I understand, it's 705.

I flew porter from ytz to yhz last summer. Amazing. Unlike westjet people who give you the "stepford wives" treatment, Porter people really seemed happy and content with their jobs, probably comes from having very happy customers to speak with.

FYI, everyone, Porter had a big advert in today's Globe and Mail. They're looking for pilots, flight attendants and AMEs.

AC and Jazz start at less than that amount of money. Westjet starts at just marginally more, but then unless you move to Calgary your life is spent commuting. I don't believe that 40k is anything less than industry standard for a 705 career job. If you take into consideration that you'll be captain in a year or so, that's a lot of extra money over the years compared to a Jazz FO that starts at a lower wage and then stays stagnant in a lower pay scale.

All the papers had the Stats Canada earning stats out on Friday. The average Canadian income was something like 41k/yr. So certainly there are people living off of 40k in Toronto.
