Alberta Student Loan program (Flight training)

Post by Dyski »

Hello everyone

Looking for some information in regards to the Alberta Government student loan program for flight training. I hold a PPl(Night rating)with a 125 hours TT All Single engine and will make a move to Alberta in October of this year (Edmonton).

I would like to know if the government of Alberta has a program to financing flight training to get a CPL,Multi-IFR and an instructor rating.

Here in Ontario we cannot get OSAP for flight training but apparently can get thousands of dollars for hair styling or cooking schools..

I would really appreciate any input or experiences in regards to the subject.

Thank u

I just finished my ppl in Edmonton, and had considered doing the rest of my training there as well. All i could have potentially qualified for was student loans, no grants or anything like that, but I'm not an alberta resident, so I couldn't even get loans from them. you could try having a look around on the alberta gov't website for something. hope that helps.

It's based on your need. I believe the maximum is between 32 and 35K... can't remember. 96% of the applicants DON'T get the maximum. It's based on what you tell them you will do... ie.. CPL, IFR, Instructor Rating... I'm not sure if multi falls under that... I had the school do it out for me... generally speaking they should know how to maximize your availability.. if you can't find anyone you can PM me and I'll give you the info I was told....

... part of that cash is a one time bursary and something else... in any case... you don't have to pay back the full amount of the loan when you're done. Because this is a government loan you don't get charged interest until you finish your training but they usually give you only one year... so the school will have to write you up a letter requesting an extention.

I am an Alberta resident.. I'm not sure if you will get any of that coming from somewhere else

Oh yeah.. and they won't give you any money for your PPL... so you didn't miss anything there.

hey, i just got my loan like 4 days ago, took about 2-3 months to get processed...
the max for commercial, multi IFR and instructor was 26600...

i think you have to be a resident for at least 1 yr to get the grant, not sure, but its worth it, i got 11500 grant. The CFI at centennial flight centre told me that 26600 isn't enough and you have to put alittle bit for build up time. With fuel prices going up, you might need more money of your own... hopefully this help

If you want more info, go talk to the CFI Joe at Centennial flight Centre, hes been doing for a awhile and try to get you the most money, i did it with him and i got 26000, so i'm happy

Good luck

Hi all, I worked very little in 2007 as I was (and continue to be) a full-time doctoral student. I continued to pay student loans throughout 2007 (- interest paid is required on tax forms). I was surprised that this did not at all impact my tax refund. In fact this is the first year I did not get a refund. How do student loan interest payments factor into tax returns? Have a good day.

Not sure about the interest... but the way I had my taxes done, you basically "bank" the money you spent so in future years when you owe money you won't actually have to pay the government.

Does anyone know how much having a 7000-8000 car will affect the amount of money I will get? It is important that I have a reliable car because it is an hour each way to get to the airport I'll me training at from my place of residence.

Hi, I have looked into various grants and scholarships but because I am not a high school senior and because I already have a bachelor's degree, I don't qualify for a lot of stuff out there. If they think I should use my degree to put myself through classes, I can't. I would have to work away from the town where my school is. I work at least 60 hours a week, and work during the time when the classes I need. Please suggest me?

Is the PCCA (Private Career Colleges Act 2005) supposed to take care of that no loan issue. If the School is a bonified certified college you can get OSAP........
