Renter Pilot Insurance

Post by Panama Jack »

I was just looking at an aviation school in the United States that rents aircraft to licenced pilots. Their policy is that renter pilots need "renter insurance" which is available through some of the major aviation insurance companies. I heard about this first over 10 years ago, and it seems to now be de-rigeur in the United States. Rental insurance is pretty expensive-- about $500 or more per year if you get third party plus hull insurance.

Not having rented an aircraft in Canada for many years, I am wondering whether the situation is the same, or whether the insurance the aircraft is on is also convered in the event of an accident at the hands of a renter pilot?

COPA facilitates insurance products to its members. Call Marsh Co.
http://www.copanational.org then see oval on top left of page.

I do rent and don't have renter's insurance. The insurance provided by the owner (club/school) of the a/c is the minimum required by law, which I understand covers only the third party liability, nothing for me or my pax. Not sure how much hull insurance is provided.

Best would be to call an insurance broker and he/she will explain further.

Did it help?

Canadian schools that rent aircraft to licensed pilots (at every location I've ever seen) have rental pilots included already on the insurance. The liability varries by school from 1 million to 5 million, with something in the neighbourhood of $300000 per person for injuries but this of course varies by company. It's in the fine print on those aircraft sign out sheets that nobody ever reads.

Yes, rental pilots are covered by the school's insurance policy.

But, the renter usually has to pay the deductible if damage is done ($5000?). The school I used to work for offered insurance on the deductible. So if damage is done, they wouldn't have to pay the deductible.
