CMA = Cowboys Mangle Airplanes
I thought I had seen it all when I witnessed a D328 @ YYC go taxing by our ramp tonight doing about 60 Kts. I was in total shock!! So much so that I turned to a PA31 f/o with whom I was standing beside only to see his jaw as wide open as mine. He was in total shock too.
Whats the hurry guys? Do you have to go and wash that pretty suit and hat you guys wear?
SLOW down......please!!
Geeezzz

Re: CMA = Cowboys Mangle Airplanes
Whenever I see something I find shocking. I assume there must be better pilots then myself in that plane and go about my day.

Great, you go into Terrace once now we have to hear about it forever.
Re: CMA = Cowboys Mangle Airplanes
There are times when fast taxiing is appropriate. Just use good judgement. Thats what they pay us for.I would rather see the guy out of my way than get stuck behind some taxi at a fast walk fellow.Ever see a speed limit at an airport?
Re: CMA = Cowboys Mangle Airplanes
And fast taxiing on floats is a blast! Just make sure your off the step before the dock.

Might wanna check your very good source. WJ has hired CMA guys very recently.

I'm pretty sure that WS hires CMA folks.

Re: CMA = Cowboys Mangle Airplanes
When you taxi too fast, brakes or not, tires heat up. The faster the taxi speed, the hotter the tires get.
Hot tires increase the chances of one (or more
) blowing on take off.
Taxiing at normal speeds is always a good idea.

Is there an official taxi speed limit?Captain_Canuck wrote:I thought I had seen it all when I witnessed a D328 @ YYC go taxing by our ramp tonight doing about 60 Kts. I was in total shock!! Are you qualified to judge their speed?
Do they even wear hats anymore?

Me thinks you have an axe to grind with CMA. Nothing more. People do weird things everyday, even us Westjet folks. Perhaps you want to post about how Westjet is a bunch of cowboys too? Better yet, it is probably because there are so many CMA people here!!!! I knew it, those westcoasters ARE different......
And, you did know that the faster you taxi, the less fuel you use. How, you wonder?? Well, you get 'er going quickly, then shut down both engines, and coast it in. YEE HAA.....

Re: CMA = Cowboys Mangle Airplanes
Problem is the ramp the taxied past is the Sunwest ramp. Sunwest feels that they own the taxiway as they use the far side of it for parking. This is an uncontrolled taxiway and nobody owns it or has rights to it even if they feel entitled to use it as a part of their ramp. The solution to this thread is for Sunwest to quit expanding their operation in the current location as there is no more room for expansion and the area is too congested. Even though others such as CMA are not required to slow through this area, they should. I have seen many a Sunwest A/C pull out without checking, fuel trucks crossing as well as aircrew. This area will see an incident in the future.
Re: CMA = Cowboys Mangle Airplanes
Total heat generation in the tire is the result of a combination of both taxi speed and distance. Rubber, being a good insulator, retains heat quite well. Especially at it's thickest point, the bead. Continuous taxiing at high speeds and long distances not only increase your chances of a blowout, but also greatly increase maintenance costs as tires need to be changed more often (just in case you needed another reason to taxi slower).altiplano wrote:that's what max tire speeds are for... taxiing at higher speeds doesn't mean my tires are going to blow on t/o...

Re: CMA = Cowboys Mangle Airplanes
Hey Tube Driver,
The next time you are taxiing way to fast by the Sunwest ramp, take a look the north and note where their airplanes are parked. They are parked inside of a hatched area they lease from the airport authority; but I guess you would be taxiing WAY to fast to notice that.
Funny thing is though, no one else to seems to be burning down the taxiway. Not Shaw, not Suncor and not even Sunwest's airplanes.
The point of this tread was to suggest slowing down when your taxiing.
I do agree with you though, this area does have potential for problems if the current conditions continue to exist.
Perhaps you have an axe to grind with Sunwest!!!

I heard that if you leave a tooth under your pillow the tooth fairy will leave money for you while you sleep.
Well, I have heard of people being fined by Transport for taxiing too fast.

Re: CMA = Cowboys Mangle Airplanes
There was a time when I was driving a Ho at a taxi speed that was way too fast, only to get to the ramp faster and go home. When I stepped out of the plane there was a small fire burning on the left wheel assembly as well as a flat tire. My guess is the brakes caused the fire because of too much use, which always happens when you're going fast.
Could you imagine if I was taxiing fast for take-off and brought the gear up while it's on fire. You would have no idea you were on fire on the ground because of the prop wash on the Ho. I learnt a lot form that stupid incident. Don't taxi fast.

I have to agree with you .:
Stupid = Landing with Tailwinds
Weird = Doc

Nothing wrong with taxiing fast in my opinion as long as you are:
1) not using the brakes
2) not affecting safety
3) not using the brakes
4) not taking high speed corners
5) NOT USING THE BRAKES!"
That's true if the brakes are steel; if they are carbon,
1) don't ride the brakes, use snubbing
2) 79% of brake wear occurs during the cold-brake taxi-out stage
3) 19% occurs during a normal landing stop
4) 2% occurs during the taxi-in-to-the-ramp phase when the brakes are warm.
Completely opposite to steel brakes.
What kind of brakes does a Do-Do have?

Re: CMA = Cowboys Mangle Airplanes
Don't need brakes with turbo props. Therefore overheating not an issue.

I am never down there as I do not work at that end. Maybe you should just cool your jets on who accuse of what because you never know exactly who you are talking to.

Re: CMA = Cowboys Mangle Airplanes
Out of curiosity what do all y'all figure a good safe taxi speed is?
I use 25 kts on the gps as a good number in King Airs, but I have to admit I've been as fast as 40 on occasion.
At 25 you just aren't keeping up to WJ and AC. (pavel level dry)
