Cat 1 medical

Post by chokechain »

What is the urine test for on the cat 1. I may or may not have roommates that do illicit substances and second hand smoke kills. If you know what I mean.

The doc is checking for sugar in your urine. In Canada,
there is no check for illegal drugs in a pilot's urine, as
there is in the USA.

In the meantime, stay away from the "second hand smoke"
if you want to fly an aircraft in Canada.

If that is the truth you might want to omit the "you know what I mean" you know what I mean?

Construction workers on the Oil Sands projects are subject to random drug testing. It is mandated by the private employers. I also undestand that they do cocaine. Since they work 10 on 4 off they can do cocaine since it leaves your body in 48 hours, unlike the smokes that can stay up to 1 month in your system past last use.

All off the above was related to me by a manager of a company out of Edmonton.

Are you saying that being an aviator doesn't require some command over the english language?

It is more testing for protein in the urine which could possibly mean kidney problems... just start drinking water like crazy the day before.

The urine sample tests for a specific enzyme and its level in your system. From this enzyme, they can determine an individual's IQ. If the levels are low enough, it demonstates a lower than average IQ, ergo you passed your medical. The average IQ is around 100. Levels are as follows:

IQ: 95 - 105 Private Pilot
85 - 95 Commercial Pilot
80 - 90 ATPL
Deduct 5 for each level for Helicopter Pilots
70 - 80 AME
65 - 80 Flight Instructor
Anything below 65 - TC Inspector

Does anyone have a study guide for the urine test?
The actual test for intelligence is to hold a flashlight to one ear and the hand to the other. If the light shines through, you are a pilot.

Actually, unless the writer (chokechain) is writing a formal essay, the use of the contraction "I'm" is correct in this case. AvCanada is anything but formal, and writing in first person signifies informality.

Otherwise your correction is on the mark.

A pilot told me that he almost failed a Cat 1 medical because of his "sugar" level. The doctor asked him what he had to eat and the pilot said he ate a couple of sugar doughnuts just before the medical. Doc said go home, drink lots of water, pee a lot and come back in a couple of hours. Subsequent test proved normal. Also heard of a pilot having a problem with a drug test because he ate a poppy seed roll just prior to the random drug test (USA) and it showed positive for heroin.
Has anyone heard of these problems or are they just old wives tales?
I do know that if your urine is a dark yellow colour, it means you are dehydrated and if you chugalug a couple of glasses of water, the colour of you urine lightens up in a very short period of time. That tells me that what you consume can show up somewhere very quickly.
I know that it helps to exercise and be in better shape for the annual treadmill stress test I have to do and maybe that is why I have never had a problem.
Just to be on the safe side, I am careful what I eat prior to the medical and I drink lots .................of water of course.
There is also scientific proof that alcoholic beverages, taken in moderation, can be beneficial. There is more good than bad in beer. The beer belly comes from the munchies one eats and the sitting around one does while consuming large amounts of beer rather than the caloric content of the beer.
I am thinking beer and veggies while jogging may be a good thing, except for the vehicle traffic one may encounter while jogging when one is pissed to the gills. Also, there is the yellow snow and/or dead grass to contend with.

No, not old wives tales at all.
I had the same kind of problem once after eating a bit too much of a super nice sugar pie the night before.
Doc was less practical trough, he sent me for a blood test three days later even after I told him about the master of disaster family dessert.

As one would guess, this kind of results could be associated with some sort of diabetes.

All came out fine.

In all seriousness, yes they test for sugar in the urine. Drink lots of water in the morning and get an early morning test before you eat something. I failed a urine test 3 days before leaving on a contract. Urine test was in the early afternoon. I was starved. Ate a big piece of cake and washed it down with pop. Not thinking. I was called back to the hospital 2 days later. They also re-took my blood pressure which was then high from the worry about why they called me back and stress of leaving the family for 6 mon. had to do a 24 hr fast and blood test. All because I was hungry. Just ask them if you can do the test first thing in the morning and do the rest later.
